Clare GAA Chairman Condemns Assault on Referee, Promises Tough Sanctions

The Clare GAA chairman has condemned an alleged assault on referee John O’Connell at an underage fixture, describing it as a “bitter step backwards” for the county and warning of severe sanctions for anyone found responsible.

An Garda Síochána have launched an investigation into claims O’Connell was assaulted at the conclusion of the game. Local station Clare FM have also reported that a male youth sustained injuries in a separate incident.

In a strongly worded statement to the Irish Examiner, Clare GAA chairman Kieran Keating set out the depth of anger and disappointment within the county.

“It was with profound shock and disappointment that we learned of the altercation that occurred at the conclusion of the above underage fixture last evening,” he wrote, framing the incident as a direct attack on years of work promoting respect for match officials.

Keating stressed that Clare GAA have invested heavily in building and protecting their panel of referees across both codes, with “Respect for the Referee” pushed as a core value to help retain and recruit officials for an ever-expanding games calendar.

That context made the reported scenes all the more galling.

“Thus, it is a bitter step backwards when any mentor, player, parent or supporter commits any infraction upon a referee, and particularly a physical assault of the nature reported upon in this case,” he said.

Keating noted that Clare had gone “many years without any such incident”, underlining how rare such flashpoints have been in the county. The fact this happened at an underage match, he added, cut even deeper for those who “love our games”.

“It is very disheartening to all of us who love our games that this would happen at an underage game, or any game, in Clare in 2026.”

Clare GAA have already been in contact with O’Connell and are awaiting the referee’s formal report before the county’s disciplinary machinery moves into action.

“Whilst we await the formal report on the game and the incident, we have been in contact with our referee John O’Connell and will assist him in dealing with the matter,” Keating confirmed.

He also highlighted the response of those present on the night.

“There were many witnesses to the incident and we sincerely thank those who came to his immediate assistance at the time.”

The chairman did not shy away from the likely consequences for any GAA member found to have assaulted the referee, pointing directly to the rulebook.

“I will be careful here to not prejudice the outcome of the disciplinary process that will swiftly follow the receipt of his report, but I can point to the minimum sanction laid out under Rule 7.2.c of the rulebook: Category Va - Any type of assault on a Referee, a Score Umpire, Line Umpire or Sideline Official: Penalties: (1) Minimum: 96 weeks Suspension, with offender’s Team liable to Disqualification, where appropriate.’”

The stakes at underage level are even higher. Keating underlined that the minimum sanction is automatically doubled when the incident occurs in an underage game.

“Those sanctions are harsh and regimented and are so designed to protect our referees and our games, and reflect the utter despondency that we all feel towards any actions of this nature,” he said.

As the Garda investigation and GAA disciplinary process move forward, the human focus remains on the match official at the centre of it all.

“We wish John a speedy recovery,” Keating concluded — a pointed message from a county determined that respect for referees will not just be a slogan, but a line that cannot be crossed.
