Chelsea Hijacks Palestra from Inter: Alonso's Strategy Unfolds

Chelsea have barged back into Serie A’s talent market with intent, hijacking Marco Palestra from Inter Milan’s grasp and immediately circling another rising defender, Jacobo Ramon of Como.

This is not scattergun spending. It already looks like Xabi Alonso’s blueprint.

Alonso’s First Big Win: Palestra Chooses Chelsea

Inter thought they were close. Atalanta had a deal lined up, the pathway seemed clear, and Marco Palestra looked set to stay in Italy. Then Chelsea arrived.

Within hours, the entire picture changed.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday morning that Chelsea had reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta and Palestra. The fee: a package worth over €55 million, plus a sell-on clause, for a 21-year-old who has only just begun to scratch the surface of his potential. A long-term contract awaits him at Stamford Bridge.

The key figure in the turnaround? Xabi Alonso.

The incoming Chelsea manager didn’t sit back and let the recruitment department handle it. He picked up the phone. According to Romano and reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Alonso held a long, detailed conversation with Palestra, even dropping bits of Italian into the call, and made it clear he had been following him since his Cagliari days.

That personal touch mattered. So did the vision.

Alonso, who leaned heavily on young, dynamic full-backs and wing-backs at Bayer Leverkusen, sees Palestra as a perfect fit. The Italy international offers rare versatility: right-back, right wing-back, left-back, left wing-back. La Gazzetta described Alonso as being “captivated” by Palestra’s English-style physicality, a profile that naturally translates to the Premier League.

Chelsea’s plan is already mapped out. On the right, Palestra will compete with Malo Gusto. On the left, he steps into a lane vacated by Marc Cucurella’s departure. For Alonso, it’s an ideal early signing: a modern, aggressive wide defender, comfortable in multiple systems and built for high-tempo football.

Inter, who had been in advanced talks, have been left watching from the sidelines. Chelsea hijacked the move, and did it decisively.

BlueCo’s Italian Project Extends to Como

The Palestra deal may only be the start.

Romano has revealed that Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, has also taken a strong interest in Jacobo Ramon, the 21-year-old Spanish centre-back who has just driven Como into the Champions League under Cesc Fabregas.

Ramon joined Como from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 and quickly became one of their standout performers. Under Fabregas, he grew into a commanding presence at the back, helping a club that only recently climbed back into the spotlight secure a place among Europe’s elite next season.

Chelsea have noticed.

On his YouTube channel, Romano explained that Ramon is one of “four or five” names on Chelsea’s centre-back shortlist. He stressed that the Spaniard is “appreciated” at Stamford Bridge and that the London club are actively tracking him.

The contact lines are already open. Talks between Chelsea and Como initially started over Trevoh Chalobah, who was requested by the Italian side. That move stalled when Como realised the English defender is currently beyond their budget. Chelsea, sensing an opportunity, flipped the conversation and asked about Ramon.

There is a complication: Real Madrid.

Ramon’s rights are split, with Los Blancos retaining 50% and a buy-back clause. Any move for the defender would require navigating that structure, and Madrid’s stance will inevitably shape what happens next. For now, though, Chelsea’s interest is clear, and Ramon’s name is firmly on their list.

Alonso’s Backline Rebuild Begins

Two defenders, two different stages of negotiation, one clear trend.

With Palestra, Chelsea have already struck. A €55m-plus package, a long-term deal, and a player handpicked and personally convinced by Alonso. With Ramon, they are probing the market, testing Como’s position and Madrid’s leverage, and stacking options for a central defensive refresh.

This is how top clubs reshape a squad: early, aggressively, and with a clear idea of profile.

Palestra brings energy and flexibility to the flanks. Ramon, if Chelsea push ahead, would add a ball-playing, modern centre-back who has already shown he can handle the pressure of a Champions League chase.

Chelsea and Como are talking. Real Madrid are lurking in the background. Alonso is already on the phone, shaping his dressing room before he has even taken charge of a competitive match.

The question now is simple: having hijacked one Italian deal to land Palestra, will Chelsea go back and prise Ramon out of Como as well?
