Barcelona's Search for a New No. 9 Hits a Wall
Barcelona’s pursuit of a new No. 9 has hit its first major wall of the summer. And it has the shape of Julian Alvarez.
For weeks, the Atletico Madrid forward has been the preferred choice at the Camp Nou to succeed Robert Lewandowski, a long‑term target identified for both his work rate and penalty-box edge. Barcelona went in hard and early. An opening bid of €100 million landed on Atletico’s table.
It barely caused a ripple.
Atletico rejected the offer outright and, crucially, never left the door even half open. Internally, the message has been the same since the start of the window: Alvarez is not for sale. Not at €100 million. Not at all.
Barcelona hit a dead end
According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, Barcelona have now effectively written off the operation. Inside the club, the Alvarez deal is being described as “impossible”. That’s not a negotiating stance. It is resignation.
The Catalans tried to change the narrative. Alvarez, 26, has already told Atletico he wants to leave, and Barcelona hoped that player pressure might bend the Madrid club’s resolve. The plan was simple: keep pushing, keep the talks alive, wait for a crack.
It never came.
Sporting director Deco even travelled to Madrid this week, meeting with Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in a final attempt to find a way through. There was optimism that when Alvarez returned to training next week, he might again express his desire to move, turning the screw on Atleti.
Still nothing. The Rojiblancos have stood firm, unmoved by the player’s stance or Barcelona’s persistence. As of today, the Spanish champions view the chase as a lost cause.
A shrinking market
That forces Barcelona into a familiar, uncomfortable position: scrambling for alternatives in a market that is already thinning out.
Some of the backup options have slipped away almost unnoticed. Joao Pedro is set to sign a new contract at Chelsea, taking one versatile attacking profile off the board. Eli Junior Kroupi, another name tracked, is sidelined for months with injury. Fisnik Asllani, viewed as a developmental option, is heading to RB Leipzig.
Targets are disappearing while Barcelona are still searching.
The club now have to pivot quickly. They need a centre-forward who can start immediately, carry the physical load, and still fit within a delicate financial structure. That combination is rare, and everyone in Europe knows they are looking.
Vlahovic waits, Osimhen offered
One name has been hovering around the conversation for some time: Dusan Vlahovic. After leaving Juventus as a free agent, the Serbian striker has been waiting for Barcelona to make a move, holding off other options as Besiktas push hard for his signature.
For a club wrestling with budget constraints, a free agent of Vlahovic’s profile is tempting. He offers size, penalty-box presence, and a proven scoring record in a top league. The question is whether Barcelona are ready to commit to him as their main No. 9, or if they still dream of a different profile.
Victor Osimhen has also been offered to the club. On pure sporting terms, he fits the bill: explosive, relentless, a constant threat in behind. But any move for the Nigerian would involve a huge financial package, wages and fee included, at a time when Barcelona are already stretching their limits.
The Alvarez door has closed. The need for a striker has not.
Barcelona now move into the decisive phase of their summer: do they gamble big on a marquee name, or trust that a more pragmatic solution can still carry a title defence?
