Barcelona have locked in a new leadership core for the 2026-27 season, and it bears Hansi Flick’s fingerprints all over it.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Raphinha will wear the armband as first captain, with Pedri installed as his deputy. Both were personally chosen by Flick, who moved early to define his hierarchy while the squad was still being shaped in pre-season and before the Joan Gamper Trophy.
Flick’s hand and the dressing room’s voice
Once the top two were set, the rest of the job fell to the dressing room. Three more captains were elected by player vote: Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and 19-year-old Yamal, completing a five-man leadership group that looks very different to last season.
The shake-up was forced by the departures on loan of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo, two heavyweights who had long anchored the club’s leadership structure. Their exits left a visible void. Flick and the squad have now moved quickly to fill it.
The German coach decided to keep faith with Raphinha and Pedri at the top of the chain, then deliberately stepped back and allowed the group to decide the remaining three. Respect for Garcia, responsibility for De Jong
Eric Garcia’s inclusion might surprise those who judge him only by minutes on the pitch. Inside the club, it does not. His selection is seen as a reward for his professionalism, discipline and day-to-day standards, which have earned him strong respect among his peers.
Frenkie de Jong’s rise into the group feels almost inevitable. With Ter Stegen gone, the Dutch midfielder becomes the most senior figure in terms of age and first-team experience. He now carries not just the rhythm of Barcelona’s midfield, but also a formal share of the responsibility for guiding a young squad through a demanding season.
Yamal, 19, and already the standard-bearer
The most striking name, though, is Yamal. Nineteen years old. Wearing the No.10 shirt. Now officially one of Barcelona’s captains.
His promotion is not about seniority. It is about impact. His influence on the pitch has already outgrown his age, and the club has decided to match his status in the hierarchy to his status in the team. At just 19, he is being treated as a reference point, not a prospect.
Barcelona know this path well. Two years ago, Gavi took the armband from Pedri in a comeback win over Sevilla at 20 years and 76 days, becoming the club’s second-youngest captain in a competitive match. The youngest remains Bojan Krkic, who captained the side in a 2010 Copa del Rey tie at 20 years and 56 days.
Yamal is not breaking that specific record, but his situation is different. He is not simply wearing the armband for a few minutes in a single game. He is formally embedded in the five-man captaincy group at 19, a clear statement that Flick sees him as the beating heart of his sporting project.
Valencia away looms – and a major doubt
With the leadership puzzle solved, attention now swings quickly to the pitch. Barcelona face a tricky La Liga trip to Valencia on Sunday, a test of their perfect domestic start and of this newly defined hierarchy.
The timing is awkward. Flick’s plans have been jolted after Yamal unexpectedly missed Saturday’s final training session. His absence turns him into a serious doubt for Mestalla and forces the coaching staff to consider how to reshape the attack if their most explosive forward cannot play.
Barcelona will travel determined to protect a flawless league record. They will do it with a new captaincy structure, a fresh chain of command, and the possibility of lining up for a big away game without the 19-year-old who already carries so much of their attacking weight.
