Atletico Madrid Signs Hjulmand as Arsenal Shifts Focus to Guimaraes
Arsenal’s midfield rebuild has taken a sharp twist, and not in their favour. Morten Hjulmand, long admired in North London and a self-confessed boyhood Arsenal fan, is heading to Madrid.
According to reports in Spain and Portugal, Atletico Madrid have struck a £38million agreement with Sporting CP for the Danish midfielder, with Diego Simeone securing the kind of all-action presence that would have fit seamlessly into Mikel Arteta’s engine room. Fabrizio Romano and Ruben Aria report that the 27-year-old is set to sign a five-year deal, with his arrival in the Spanish capital scheduled for Thursday to finalise the move.
For Arsenal, it closes one door just as another creaks open.
Hjulmand slips away
Arsenal had monitored Hjulmand closely and were tipped as potential late movers, especially after Atletico’s initial bid was rejected by Sporting. There was a sense the Premier League champions might pounce if negotiations in Madrid stalled.
They never did.
Aria reports that Hjulmand’s own determination to join Atletico proved decisive. Sporting had promised to let him go if the right offer landed, and once the numbers matched their expectations, the deal accelerated. Paperwork is now being exchanged, leaving Arsenal to reassess a midfield plan that had quietly included the Dane as a serious option.
With Hjulmand bound for La Liga, attention in North London has swung more firmly towards a far bigger prize.
Arsenal ready to move for Bruno
Bruno Guimaraes has made his position clear at Newcastle United: he wants to leave this summer. The Brazilian, bruised after a shock last-16 exit with his national team at the hands of Norway – Erling Haaland’s brace doing the damage – is the latest star to push for the exit at St James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali departed at the end of last season. Alexander Isak left for Liverpool a year earlier in a major deal. Now their captain could follow.
The Guardian reports that Arsenal are preparing to step up their pursuit after Guimaraes informed Newcastle of his desire to move to North London. Talks with his representatives last month appear to have left a strong impression: it is said the midfielder has his heart set on the capital and on working under Arteta.
Arsenal are understood to be readying an offer in the region of £60million. Newcastle, stripped of several marquee names in quick succession, are reluctant to lose another talisman, especially one who has worn the armband and anchored their resurgence. This is not a straightforward negotiation. It is, however, one Arsenal seem determined to test.
Midfield priority amid Rice concerns
Midfield remains the central theme of Arsenal’s summer. Declan Rice is the cornerstone of Arteta’s side, but questions over his long-term fitness have prompted the club to look aggressively at options who can share the load, rotate at the highest level, and protect against any future absences.
Guimaraes is clearly the headline target, but he is not the only name on the list. Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott have been identified as alternatives, while uncertainty around Christian Norgaard’s future keeps the Brentford captain on the radar.
Missing out on Hjulmand narrows the field. It also sharpens the focus. Arsenal need legs, control and personality in the middle of the pitch if they are to defend their Premier League crown and go deeper in Europe. The profile is clear; the question is whether they can land the right player at the right price in a market that knows they are shopping from a position of strength and urgency.
Attack also under review
The rebuild does not stop in midfield. Arsenal are also probing the market for attacking reinforcements, aware that an already potent frontline still needs more variety and depth for another gruelling campaign.
Morgan Rogers has emerged as their number one attacking target, according to The Guardian. The Aston Villa forward fits the mould: young, dynamic, Premier League-tested, and capable of operating across the front line.
The problem is the fee. Villa are said to be demanding in excess of £100million for the England international, a figure that would test even Arsenal’s newfound financial muscle. Julian Alvarez is another name under consideration, but prising him away would be similarly expensive, with Barcelona also circling and Manchester City in no rush to sell a proven winner.
A decisive window ahead
So the picture is clear. Hjulmand is gone, Atletico have their man, and Arsenal’s margin for error narrows.
The Premier League champions want at least one top-class midfielder and a forward who can change games at the sharp end of the season. They have the pull, they have the platform, and they appear to have willing targets.
What they do not have is unlimited time. Or, as the Hjulmand saga just proved, a free run at the players they admire most.
