Atlético Madrid's Bold Promise to Julián Álvarez: A 500 Million Clause
Atlético Madrid have put a bold promise on the table for Julián Álvarez – one that could blow his future wide open next summer.
The Argentine forward, tied to the club until 2030, pushed hard to leave in the last transfer window. He wanted out. Barcelona came calling, and he was ready to go. Atlético’s answer was blunt: no.
The refusal lit the fuse. Inside the club, Álvarez’s stance caused real irritation. Atlético rejected Barça’s offer and, in response, opened the door to Arsenal instead. The Premier League move was there for him. He said no to that as well.
Now, the story has taken a different twist.
A 500 million wall – and the key to unlock it
On Spanish show "El Chiringuito", journalist Pipe Estrada revealed that chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has given Álvarez a very specific target with a very big reward.
Hit 20 goals this season, and the release clause comes down.
Right now, that clause sits at a staggering 500 million euros. It is a number designed to scare off just about everyone. Lower it, and the entire market changes around him.
Estrada put it plainly: “Miguel Ángel Gil Marín promised Julián that he would lower the value of the release clause in his contract if he reaches 20 goals.”
Two other journalists on the programme, Jota Jordi and José Álvarez, stopped short of fully backing that exact condition. They did, however, point to something just as significant: Atlético’s position on a future sale is no longer as rigid as it was in the summer.
The club that once slammed the door shut now seems willing to at least leave it on the latch.
From tension to trust
That shift has not come out of nowhere. The weeks after the window closed were tense. Álvarez, disappointed at being denied his preferred move, went through a difficult spell, according to reports.
Gradually, the storm eased.
His attitude in training drew praise. Then came the performance that changed the mood: a standout display against Liverpool at Anfield. Even in defeat, Álvarez’s level, intensity and character impressed people inside the club.
So much so that Gil Marín picked up the phone himself after the match. He called Álvarez to congratulate him, not just on his performance but on the way he had carried himself in a tough period.
From anger to appreciation, the relationship has been recalibrated on the back of his response.
Central to Simeone – for now
For Diego Simeone, the situation is simple. Julián Álvarez is at the heart of his project. He remains a reference point in attack, and that is not expected to change this season.
The promise from the board adds a sharp edge to his campaign. Twenty goals is no small ask, but it is now tied directly to his freedom. Every finish nudges that 500 million barrier closer to being broken down.
Atlético have made their bet. Álvarez has his challenge.
If he hits that mark, the next summer window might not be a story of blocked exits, but of how far the game’s biggest clubs are willing to go for him.
