Aston Villa Sign Johan Manzambi for Record £59.5m
Aston Villa have torn up their own transfer ceiling and Newcastle’s best-laid plans to land one of Europe’s fastest-rising midfielders. Johan Manzambi, the 20-year-old Switzerland international who lit up the World Cup and the Europa League, is heading to Villa Park in a club-record £59.5m deal from Freiburg.
Newcastle thought they had him. Villa refused to let that stand.
Villa smash record to get their man
Newcastle had agreed a £49m package with Freiburg and Manzambi had already verbally settled on personal terms. The pathway to St James’ Park looked clear. One more conversation after Switzerland’s World Cup campaign, then the formalities.
Villa crashed that script.
Armed with Champions League football and a bigger bid, they went back to Freiburg with an offer that climbed to almost £59.5m (€70m) including add-ons, according to Sky in Germany. It eclipses the £50m they paid Everton for Amadou Onana in the summer of 2024 and underlines just how far they are prepared to go for a player they believe can reshape their midfield.
The lure of Europe’s elite competition proved decisive. Faced with a choice between Eddie Howe’s project and a Champions League platform at Villa, Manzambi turned away from the North East and towards the Midlands.
From Freiburg’s engine room to Villa’s new centrepiece
Manzambi arrives off the back of a season that turned him from promising youngster into one of the most coveted midfielders on the continent. Primarily a central midfielder, he became the heartbeat of Freiburg’s campaign last year, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 47 games in all competitions.
He did it with end product, but also with presence. Freiburg trusted him to dictate games, to break lines, to arrive late in the box. Europe took notice.
UEFA did too. Manzambi was named Europa League Young Player of the Season after driving Freiburg all the way to the final. That last step, though, belonged to Villa, who beat the Bundesliga side 3-0 in Istanbul. Now they have taken Freiburg’s prize asset as well.
World Cup breakout that changed everything
If the Europa League put Manzambi on the radar, the World Cup blasted his name into living rooms across the globe.
For Switzerland, he scored three times on the way to the quarter-finals, remarkably finishing with more goals than starts. He came off the bench against Bosnia-Herzegovina, entered the fray in the 71st minute and ripped the game apart, scoring twice and earning man-of-the-match honours. Then came Canada: a goal, an assist, and another performance that made scouts reach for their phones.
Just when the tournament seemed set to become his personal stage, it stopped. A minor injury ruled him out of the quarter-final defeat to Argentina and left a nagging question hanging over Switzerland’s campaign.
Could he have tilted that tie against ageing opposition if he’d been fit for extra-time? Might Switzerland have avoided extra-time altogether with his energy and incision between the lines? Former Switzerland defender Bruno Berner summed up the feeling back home when he told Sky Sports: “We missed him massively. He would have given us something different.”
That sense of “what if?” has now shifted to the Premier League – only this time, it’s framed as “what next?”
Statement signing, Champions League stakes
For Villa, this is not just another expensive addition. It is a clear statement of where they see themselves in the new Premier League hierarchy. They have outbid and outmanoeuvred a direct rival for a player every recruitment department in Europe has been tracking since last autumn.
They are buying potential, of course, but they are also buying production. Goals from midfield. Assists. Big-game temperament. A 20-year-old who has already played in a European final and a World Cup quarter-final run.
Newcastle will move on to other targets. They have to. Villa, though, have secured the one both clubs wanted.
The fee, the profile, the context – all of it points in one direction. Aston Villa are not just trying to stay in the Champions League conversation. With Johan Manzambi at the heart of their midfield, they are planning to shape it.
