Asencio Faces Disciplinary Action at Real Madrid Under Mourinho

Recently cleared of charges over the non-consensual distribution of an explicit video, the 23-year-old defender has barely had time to draw breath before another storm hit. This time, there is no courtroom drama, but the consequences cut just as deep inside the Santiago Bernabeu.
The club has opened internal disciplinary proceedings after Asencio was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, a serious traffic offence that brought an eight-month driving licence suspension and a €14,400 fine. Real Madrid moved quickly. So did José Mourinho.

The Portuguese head coach chose not to hide behind platitudes. He went public, and he went hard on standards.
“A Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 12 months a year,” Mourinho said on the club’s official website, making it clear that the badge does not come off when players leave Valdebebas.
“Everything you do outside your professional area continues to reflect on Real Madrid, continues to affect the prestige of a club that is untouchable. I am not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but accumulated mistakes are something different.”
That last line landed with particular force. One incident can be forgiven; a pattern is something else. For Mourinho, the line between the two has now been crossed.
Exemplary in Valdebebas, trouble outside it
Yet this is not a simple tale of a player cast aside. Mourinho’s frustration is sharpened by what he sees every day at the training ground.
“I spoke with him when I arrived,” he admitted. “We talked about things from the past. Since I arrived, I haven’t spoken about situations outside Valdebebas because in Valdebebas, he is an exemplary professional.
“When he was well, no one trained more or better than him. Now that he has been injured for weeks, he is the first to arrive, the last to leave, showing extreme dedication to his recovery.”
It is a stark contrast. Inside the club’s walls, Asencio impresses: first through the gate, last off the pitch, relentless in his rehab. Outside them, his decisions have dragged his name — and by extension Real Madrid’s — into headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Injury, uncertainty and a career at a crossroads
Asencio has not played a single minute for Real Madrid this season. A persistent muscle problem has kept him sidelined, confined to a physical recovery programme while the team moves on without him.
Now, as he works to get his body right, another battle runs in parallel. The club’s hierarchy will decide the internal punishment for his drink-driving conviction, weighing his professionalism at Valdebebas against the damage done to the club’s image.
Once he is finally fit, the challenge will be even tougher than any sprint drill or gym session. He will have to convince Mourinho that he can be trusted, convince team-mates that he belongs in that dressing room, convince a demanding fanbase that he is more than the headlines that follow him.
