Arsenal Pursue Bruno Guimaraes as Champions Strengthen Title Defence
Arsenal are closing the net around Bruno Guimaraes in a deal that underlines exactly where the Premier League champions see themselves now: at the very top of the food chain and shopping accordingly.
The Gunners have agreed a package with Newcastle for the Brazil midfielder worth around £75million, with add-ons pushing the final fee towards £80m. Once the final details are ticked off, Guimaraes will sign a four-year contract running to the summer of 2030.
He was expected to cut short Newcastle’s pre-season camp in Spain, having only just flown in from Brazil on Monday after a post-World Cup break, to return to the UK and complete his medical. When a player leaves a camp that quickly, the writing is usually on the wall.
Arteta keeps his guard up
Mikel Arteta, though, refused to be drawn into any celebrations. Not yet.
After watching his side lose 3-1 to Real Betis in a friendly in Dublin on Wednesday night, the Arsenal manager was asked directly how much of a lift Guimaraes would give his squad.
“I'm not going to talk about any players who aren't Arsenal players,” he said, stone-faced, batting the question away.
Pressed again on the potential boost of landing such a high-level midfielder, Arteta stayed firmly behind the line.
“Well, I can tell you at the moment that something happens and we can announce it. I will give you my straight answer.”
For now, he is content to let the paperwork speak when it is finally complete.
A statement summer
Guimaraes will be Arsenal’s fourth signing of a summer that has quietly become one of the most assertive of the Arteta era.
The champions have already brought in Greek winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m, adding direct running and goals from wide areas. They have also moved to secure their goalkeeping department, snapping up Illan Meslier on a free transfer following his exit from Leeds.
At the back, Arsenal triggered their option on Piero Hincapie, turning the Ecuador defender’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent deal for around £34.5m. Versatile, aggressive, comfortable stepping into midfield – he fits the evolving template.
Guimaraes, though, is different. This is the kind of signing that changes the temperature of a dressing room. A World Cup-level Brazil midfielder in his prime, arriving for a title-winning side that wants more.
Vinicius Jr talk swirls in background
While Guimaraes edges closer, another Brazil star has hovered at the edges of Arsenal’s summer narrative.
The club are ready to explore what would be the boldest move in their history: a push for Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid forward has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu, a situation that always pricks up the ears of Europe’s elite.
Any move would be audacious, bordering on improbable, and Arsenal know it. Madrid, too, have moved to slam the door before it even starts to creak.
Crunch talks between the Spanish giants and Vinicius Jr’s representatives on Wednesday are understood to have gone well, with Real and head coach Jose Mourinho now confident the Brazilian will sign a lucrative extension to stay in LaLiga.
For Arsenal, it is a reminder of the level they are now operating at: their name is being mentioned in the same breath as players of that stature. Even if the answer, this time, is likely to be no.
Calafiori lays down the marker
Inside the Arsenal camp, there is no attempt to play down the scale of their ambition.
Defender Riccardo Calafiori, speaking after the defeat to Betis in Dublin, was blunt about what the champions need if they are to build on last season’s title.
“We are on that level now. We are on top,” the Italian said.
“We want to win the league again and we want to be even better than last season if we can. We need these kind of players, I think.”
Players like Guimaraes. Players like Vinicius Jr.
The message from the dressing room is clear. The bar has been raised. The question now is how far Arsenal are willing – and able – to push it in this window.
