Andrey Santos Set for Manchester United Debut in Helsinki
Andrey Santos is poised for his first glimpse in Manchester United red on Saturday, named in the travelling squad for the pre-season friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki.
The 22-year-old Brazilian, Michael Carrick’s first permanent signing, only walked through the doors at Carrington on Monday after completing a move from Chelsea that could rise to £50 million. Four days of training later, he is already on the plane, a clear sign of how eager United are to fast-track him into their plans.
Carrick’s new era takes shape
Carrick has picked a 25-man group that blends hardened Premier League regulars with ambitious academy talent. It is not full strength – far from it – with several senior players, including fellow new midfielder Youri Tielemans, still on post-World Cup leave. But it is strong enough to offer clues about United’s evolving spine.
Harry Maguire travels and will anchor a defensive unit that also features Luke Shaw and exciting young full-back Ayden Heaven. Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee are all involved, giving Carrick a solid core of first-teamers around which to test the kids.
At the other end of the age spectrum, teenagers Harry Amass and Shea Lacey are handed another chance to impress, part of a group of youngsters being pushed closer to the senior setup.
Sesko stays home, door opens for youngsters
One notable absentee is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenia striker is still working his way back to full fitness after the shin injury that ruled him out of the final three games of last season, and United are taking no risks.
His absence reshapes the forward pecking order for the weekend. It hands an opening to young attackers Chidi Obi and Ethan Wheatley, both included in the squad and suddenly that bit closer to serious minutes. JJ Gabriel, however, misses out.
On the right side of defence, Jaydan Kamason will hope this trip becomes a personal breakthrough, while the midfield pool behind Santos is crowded with academy promise: Jacob Devaney, Dan Gore and Jim Thwaites all travel, joined by Tyler and Jack Fletcher. For Carrick, Helsinki offers a live laboratory to test combinations and temperament.
Heaton leads the keepers
In goal, new signing Karl Darlow stays behind despite joining this week on a free transfer from Leeds. Instead, veteran Tom Heaton provides the experience, supported by Radek Vitek and Dermot Mee. Pre-season often defines the goalkeeping hierarchy beneath the No. 1; this tour will be no different.
Wrexham tune up for U.S. tour
On the other side, Wrexham arrive in Finland with their own plans and a packed summer ahead. Phil Parkinson’s side are due to fly to the United States next week for high-profile friendlies against Leeds, Liverpool and Sunderland, but they have left two familiar names at home.
Josh Windass and Max Cleworth do not travel, both managed carefully after lingering issues from last season.
“We're where we need to be in terms of fitness,” Parkinson said. “We've got a few lads, like most clubs, who have come back in later, with one or two niggly things which have carried over from last season.
“However, we're not overly concerned with those and the lads are in a good place. There'll be a few who aren't quite ready for the game at the weekend and will be training here instead.
“Josh has been running this week. He's had a slight problem with his calf, but he's in great shape and there's no need to rush him too much. Max had a problem with his Achilles, which has been an ongoing problem. But we feel this off-season, and this slow build-up for him now, will do him good.”
For Wrexham, Helsinki is a staging post before a glamour tour. For United, it is something else entirely: an early look at Santos in their colours, a snapshot of Carrick’s rebuild in motion, and a chance for a cluster of youngsters to prove they belong in the conversation when the real season starts.
