Maldini, working closely with his advisor Leonardo, has zeroed in on Pirlo after months of speculation circling more familiar names such as Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini. Pirlo, once the elegant conductor of Italy’s midfield, is now the leading candidate to take charge on the touchline.

Gazzetta reports that Malagò is expected to meet Pirlo shortly, potentially as early as today, to discuss his ideas, tactical vision and plans for the national team. Only after that conversation will Malagò decide whether to rubber-stamp Maldini’s choice.

The dynamic is clear: the technical call lies with Maldini, but the appointment still needs Malagò’s approval.
