Alkorta on Mbappe-Vinicius Ego Issues as Mourinho Takes Charge
Rafael Alkorta has never been one to hide behind clichés. Asked why the dream pairing of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior has misfired at Real Madrid, the former defender went straight for the jugular: the problem, he says, isn’t talent. It’s ego.
“Since Mbappe arrived, the issue has been one of egos,” Alkorta said, cutting through the usual talk of tactics and systems. “I’ve never understood the whole ego thing, nor did I experience it in a dressing room, but the reality is that the connection hasn't quite clicked.”
On the pitch, Mbappe keeps delivering. Fifty goals a season is the kind of return that normally bends a dressing room around a single star. At Madrid, though, he is supposed to share that orbit.
“Mbappe scores 50 goals a season, and hopefully, Mourinho can get the two of them performing well together,” Alkorta added. The message is clear: the numbers are there, the chemistry is not.
Mourinho’s demands and Vinicius under the microscope
If there is a coach who relishes this kind of volatile mix, it is Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese has walked into a club where Mbappe is already entrenched as a global figure and where Vinicius, now 26, stands at a crossroads.
“If Vinicius stays, Mourinho will demand things from him that previous coaches couldn't get,” Alkorta insisted. “He’s surely already made his expectations clear.”
That “if” is shrinking. Representatives of Vinicius have already sat down with Real Madrid to discuss extending his contract beyond 2027, and both sides are described as moderately optimistic after edging closer in negotiations. No white smoke yet, but the talks are moving.
Alkorta, who knows the temperature of the Bernabeu as well as anyone, believes the fanbase will be relieved if the extension gets done.
“Fans will be happy that he’s close to renewing,” he said. But he didn’t sugar-coat the Brazilian’s recent form. “Mourinho is trying to do what neither Xabi Alonso nor [Alvaro] Arbeloa could manage with the Mbappe-Vinicius duo. They’ve had very little chemistry with the ball and none at all off the ball. I think Vinicius's last two years haven't been good.”
That is a brutal assessment of a player once seen as the club’s next long-term attacking reference point. Under Mourinho, there will be nowhere to hide.
A pre-season built around a fragile partnership
Real Madrid now turn to the pitch to try to solve what the boardroom and the dressing room have not yet cracked. A friendly against Ferencvaros on Saturday opens a crucial stretch of preparation, followed four days later by a meeting with Deportivo La Coruna.
These are not just warm-up games. For Mourinho, they are laboratories.
He needs Mbappe and Vinicius to move from parallel stars to a functioning partnership, to show at least a hint of the understanding that has so far eluded them “with the ball” and, more damningly, “off the ball,” as Alkorta put it.
The real examination arrives on August 22, when Madrid open their 2026/27 Liga campaign away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. By then, Mourinho will want more than handshakes and staged photos between his two forwards. He will want patterns, combinations, shared responsibility.
Mbappe is already scoring at a historic rate. Vinicius is negotiating his future. Mourinho is setting his demands. Somewhere in that triangle, Madrid’s season will be defined.
