Ajax Sign Yves Bissouma on Free Transfer for Fresh Start

Ajax have ended weeks of speculation by officially unveiling Yves Bissouma, handing the Mali international a long-term deal that runs until June 30, 2027 and offering him a clean slate after a turbulent spell in England.

The 28-year-old arrives in Amsterdam as a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Tottenham at the end of last season. His signature takes immediate effect, giving Ajax an experienced engine-room presence as they look to reassert themselves in the Eredivisie.

From stalled Spurs stint to new Ajax platform

Bissouma’s final year in North London never really got going. He featured just 11 times for Spurs, unable to convince successive coaches that he could be trusted as a regular in a side chasing European places.

His time at Tottenham was repeatedly overshadowed by disciplinary problems, most notably a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. The incident stained his reputation and became a reference point whenever his name surfaced.

Now he walks into the Johan Cruyff ArenA with something to prove and, crucially, a club willing to give him the stage.

“One of the biggest clubs in Europe”

If there are doubts outside, Bissouma himself is not carrying them.

“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, clearly relishing the move.

Asked whether the transfer came out of nowhere, the former Brighton midfielder made it clear this was no last-minute scramble. “Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained.

“They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”

The word “project” matters at Ajax. The club is rebuilding, trying to blend its academy core with seasoned professionals who understand the demands of top-level football. Bissouma, with Premier League and European experience, fits that brief.

Steel, leadership and a point to prove

Ajax see more than just a ball-winner. They see a presence.

The club’s recruitment team have moved for a player who can add bite and authority in midfield, but also personality in a dressing room stacked with young talent.

“I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” Bissouma declared, leaving little doubt about his mindset.

He also made it clear he intends to be more than just another senior pro in the room. “I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added.

For a squad that often leans heavily on academy graduates, that kind of guidance could be as valuable as his tackles and interceptions.

Cruijff: “We have brought in an experienced player”

Behind the scenes, this was no opportunistic swoop. Technical Director Jordi Cruijff revealed that Ajax had been monitoring Bissouma’s situation for months and moved early to position themselves.

“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level,” Cruijff said.

“He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible.”

Securing that kind of profile without paying a transfer fee underlines the calculated nature of the move. Ajax are betting that in the right environment, the combative midfielder who once dominated Premier League midfields for Brighton can re-emerge.
