Zamalek Grinds Past Abu Qir to Top of Egyptian Premier League
Zamalek did not sparkle. They did not need to. What they did was win, and that was enough to send the reigning champions provisionally back to the top of the Egyptian Premier League.
Under the Cairo Stadium lights on Tuesday night, the White Knights edged newly promoted Abu Qir Fertilizers 2-0 in a game that felt far tighter than the scoreline suggests. The visitors saw more of the ball, took more shots and, for long stretches, made the champions look uncomfortable.
The points, though, stayed in Cairo.
Ismail’s rocket settles early nerves
Abu Qir arrived with nothing to lose and played like it. They pressed high, kept the ball and refused to be overawed. Zamalek, still searching for rhythm this season, needed an early jolt.
It came in the 17th minute.
Mahmoud Abdel Rahim "Genesh" rushed out to close down Mahmoud Bentayg, who had broken in behind. The ball broke loose, hanging for a split second in the penalty area. Mohamed Ismail did not hesitate. He met it with a vicious volley, driving it into the unguarded net and snapping the tension in an instant.

You might have expected the champions to take control from there. They did not. Abu Qir kept the ball, finishing with 53% possession and a 13–8 advantage in shots. They moved it with confidence, forced Zamalek back and made the leaders defend deep.
The pattern was clear: Zamalek had the lead, Abu Qir had the initiative.
Abu Qir’s big moment – and Debash’s rescue
The second half belonged to the newcomers. They pushed Zamalek back, worked the flanks and finally carved out the chance they had been chasing.
It arrived in the 69th minute and should have changed the night.
Omar Gaber whipped in a cross, and Oday Dabbagh darted to meet it, steering the ball goalwards. For a heartbeat, Cairo Stadium braced for the equaliser. Then Mohamed Debash appeared, reading the danger and racing back to hook the ball off the line with a superb last-ditch clearance.
That was the scare. The biggest of the night. Abu Qir had the champions on the ropes, but they still had nothing to show for it.
Zamalek, rattled but not broken, tightened up. The game drifted into its final minutes with the champions clinging to their lead and the newcomers throwing everything they had left at them.
Sherif kills it late
Just when Abu Qir seemed closest to snatching something, Zamalek struck again.
Three minutes from the end of normal time, substitute Ahmed Sherif slipped into the penalty area unnoticed. One clever run, one calm touch, and the ball was floating over Genesh and into the net.
2-0. Game over.
It was a ruthless reminder of the difference between a side learning the division and a side that knows how to close out nights like this. Abu Qir had the numbers – more possession, more attempts – but Zamalek had the moments that matter.
Champions back on top – with work to do
The victory lifts Zamalek to 10 points from four matches and, at least for now, to the top of the table. They sit a point ahead of Pyramids, Al-Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra, though both the Sky Blues and the Reds have a game in hand.
It is three wins from four for the defending champions, adding Abu Qir to a list that already includes Al-Bank Al-Ahly and Suez Petrojet. The only blemish remains the opening-day draw with Al-Ittihad Al-Sakandary.
For Abu Qir Fertilizers, the story is harsher. A third straight defeat leaves them stuck on 3 points in 15th place. Performances like this one show they can compete. The table, unforgiving as ever, shows they must start turning that into results.
Zamalek now switch focus to the continent, hosting Djibouti's Port on Saturday in the second leg of the African Champions League preliminary round, before a league trip to Ghazl El Mahalla on 16 September.
They are back on top. The question is how long they can stay there playing this close to the edge.
