The Chelsea head coach admitted he is eager for Enzo Fernandez’s future to be resolved as Manchester City consider returning with a new bid for the midfielder.

Fernandez has spent the entire summer at the centre of speculation. Early in the window he was strongly linked with Real Madrid, only for the Spanish giants to cool their interest and step away from the noise. That created space for Enzo Maresca’s City, who have since identified the Argentina international as a major target.

Chelsea set their stall out two weeks ago: any club wanting Fernandez had to meet their £120m valuation by a specific deadline. City did not bite. The date came and went, the player stayed put, and the saga looked to be drifting.

Now fresh reports suggest City are ready to test Chelsea’s resolve again, deadline or not.

In the meantime, Fernandez is back in blue and back in the fold. He has returned to full training and, crucially, featured in Alonso’s first Premier League game in charge. Named among the substitutes for Monday night’s opener, he entered on 65 minutes and helped Chelsea see out a 3-2 win, a small but clear sign he remains part of the manager’s plans.

After the final whistle, Alonso was pressed on whether Fernandez will still be his player when the window closes. He could not offer guarantees, but he did not hide his desire for a swift resolution.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

For now, Chelsea’s strategy is clear: trim the squad and raise funds. The focus at Stamford Bridge has shifted firmly to outgoings in the final stretch of the window.
