Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez Will Stay at Chelsea

Enzo Fernandez is back in blue and, for now, going nowhere. That is the clear message from Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso as Manchester City push to test the club’s resolve over the Argentina midfielder.

Chelsea reached an understanding with Fernandez’s agent Javier Pastore in late May: if a club put £120m on the table, he could leave. But there was a catch – any offer had to arrive by 14 August.

That date has come and gone. No bid. No formal proposal. And Chelsea have now told Fernandez’s camp that he is not for sale in this window.

City, led by Enzo Maresca – the man who coached Fernandez at Stamford Bridge – are still interested and believe Chelsea remain open to doing business. The champions sense an opportunity. Chelsea are adamant there isn’t one.

Caught in the middle is the 25-year-old himself, preparing for a Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday while his name dominates the final weeks of the transfer window.

Alonso, at least publicly, is treating the situation as settled.

Asked on Thursday whether Fernandez would still be at Stamford Bridge when the window shuts on 1 September, he did not hesitate: “Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he's getting ready for Monday.”

No caveats. No hints. Just a line in the sand.

Alonso went further, stressing how smoothly Fernandez has slotted back into club life after his World Cup exploits.

He said the midfielder has “integrated really well” since rejoining the group and is “training really well”, before underlining the one thing any coach wants to see when speculation swirls.

“I see him with a really good attitude and that's what we want,” Alonso said.

The noise around a £120m move will not disappear overnight. But as Chelsea head into the new season, Alonso’s stance is simple: Enzo Fernandez is in his plans, and City will have to look elsewhere unless they can blow that position apart.
