Xabi Alonso Faces Early Challenge at Chelsea
Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea era has its first bump in the road before a competitive ball has even been kicked.
The new head coach will head out on the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia without two of his summer recruits, after Emanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda were both left out of the 27-man travelling party.
Early blow for Alonso
Chelsea confirmed a squad of 27 for the camp in Sydney, a group that does include their latest signing, defender Marco Palestra, who has arrived from Atalanta in a £43 million deal. The Italian joins up immediately, thrown straight into Alonso’s first pre-season canvas.
Emegha and Quenda, though, will stay behind.
Both forwards were officially tied down earlier in the window, with Chelsea striking agreements with Strasbourg for Emegha and Sporting Lisbon for Quenda before the summer truly got going. The pair have only recently linked up properly with the squad, but their start under Alonso has stalled almost as soon as it began.
Emegha injured, questions over Quenda
According to British newspaper The Sun, 23-year-old Dutch striker Emanuel Emegha suffered a hamstring injury during a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Bromley, a game Chelsea won 3-0.
He had even been on the scoresheet. João Pedro, Jimmy-Jay Gittens and Emegha all found the net in that tune-up match, a quietly encouraging run-out for Alonso’s new-look attack. Then came the setback. Emegha pulled up, and the medical verdict has been serious enough to keep him off the plane.
Quenda’s situation is different – and far less clear.
The 19-year-old Portugal right winger has not travelled, but the club has not disclosed the reason for his omission from the tour squad. There is no official word of injury, no explanation of personal reasons. For now, it is simply an absence that raises questions without offering answers.
Even so, there is a sliver of optimism. Both Emegha and Quenda could yet join the tour at a later stage if circumstances allow, giving Alonso the chance to work with his full complement of attacking options before the Premier League campaign begins.
World Cup hangover
Alonso’s preparations are also shaped by the lingering shadow of the World Cup. Several key players who went deep into the tournament are missing the early stages of pre-season after extended duty with their national teams.
Top of that list is Morgan Rogers, the headline £117 million signing from Aston Villa, whose arrival was meant to signal a new attacking focal point for Chelsea. Club captain Reece James is also absent, both players resting after a long and demanding campaign with England.
They will rejoin later, once their off-season break is complete, and slot into a squad that is already being moulded in Alonso’s image on the training pitches of Sydney and beyond.
For now, the new manager works with what he has: a high-priced defender in Palestra on board immediately, a marquee forward in Rogers still on holiday, and two fresh attacking signings stuck in limbo. Pre-season is supposed to be about rhythm and cohesion. Alonso’s first steps at Chelsea begin with adaptation and improvisation instead.
