Wrexham Claims First Championship Win with Perfect Away Performance
Phil Parkinson has “answered his critics” with what former captain Ben Tozer called a “perfect away performance” as Wrexham ripped into Millwall to claim their first Championship win of the season.
The pressure had been building. Four games in all competitions, no victories, no clean sheet. Questions started to circle around Parkinson for the first time since he walked into the Racecourse in 2021 and began hauling the club up the divisions.
A 3-0 win at The Den is one way to shut that noise down.
Millwall, beaten play-off semi-finalists last season and usually snarling on home turf, were swept aside as Wrexham delivered exactly the kind of controlled, ruthless display their manager has long preached. The visitors not only scored three, they did not allow a single shot on target.
For Tozer, who made 136 appearances for the club and helped drive those back-to-back promotions, it was the response he expected from a dressing room he knows well.
“Parkinson has been questioned after their start,” he told BBC Radio Wales, but stressed the manager would have felt a reaction coming. The key, Tozer pointed out, lay in the decisions: restoring Max Cleworth and Josh Windass to the side to spark that change in tempo and solidity.
The effect was immediate. Millwall’s crowd, usually a weapon, turned on their own players early as Wrexham took control and never loosened their grip. Tozer didn’t dress it up: this, he said, was “pretty much the perfect away performance at a really tough place to play”.
Three goals. A clean sheet. No shots on target faced. Control from first whistle to last.
Even at 3-0 up, Wrexham did not drift. The substitutes came on and, as Tozer highlighted, kept the “intensity and energy levels high”, refusing to let Millwall back into the contest or even into dangerous areas.
Parkinson has heard doubts before. According to his former captain, he keeps finding the answers. At The Den, he delivered his loudest one of the new campaign.
