West Ham United Break EFL Transfer Record for Arne Engels

West Ham United have sent a jolt through the Championship by smashing the EFL transfer record to land Arne Engels from Celtic in a £22m deal.

The 22-year-old Belgium international has signed a five-year contract, with West Ham confirming it as a "record fee paid by an EFL Championship club". That figure eclipses the £17.5m Ipswich Town spent last year on Norway forward Sindre Walle Egeli and underlines just how hard the Hammers intend to hit back after relegation.

This is not a timid reset. It is a statement.

Record deal, clear intent

West Ham’s first season outside the Premier League since 2012 begins with a trip to Burnley on Sunday, a stark reminder of how far they have fallen in a few turbulent months. Yet their transfer business tells a different story: a club refusing to drift.

Engels arrives as a versatile weapon. Comfortable in midfield, at right-back or on the right wing, he gives West Ham options all over the flank and in the middle of the pitch. He will not feature at Burnley and must wait for his debut, which is expected to come in the home league derby against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on Saturday, 22 August.

By then, the Championship will already be in full swing. West Ham clearly plan to be in the thick of it.

Building a promotion squad

Engels becomes West Ham's fourth signing of the summer, joining Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman and Israel winger Manor Solomon. It is a spine with experience, wrapped around a young talent whose ceiling is still rising.

Nils Koppen, West Ham’s director of player recruitment, made no attempt to play down the significance of the move.

“Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target," he told the club’s website. "For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence.

"Arne has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build moving forward. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge."

The word “challenge” hangs over the whole season. The Championship is unforgiving. West Ham are paying Premier League money to make sure they are not stuck in it for long.

From Celtic titles to a London rebuild

Engels arrives with a winning habit. He has already collected back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic, having joined the Glasgow club from Augsburg in August 2024 after starting his career at Club Brugge. Four caps for Belgium hint at his international pedigree, with plenty of room for that number to grow.

Now he walks into a very different environment: a relegated giant, a restless fanbase, and a division where reputation counts for little.

"It's a really nice project to come into," Engels said. "To try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal.

“It's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully it's going to be a good year."

West Ham have paid record money for that hope. The question now is simple: can Engels help turn an expensive project into a promotion parade?
