West Ham United Signs Arne Engels for Record Fee
West Ham United have fired the first major shot of the Championship season, smashing the EFL transfer record to land Celtic midfielder Arne Engels in a £22m deal.
The 22-year-old Belgium international has signed a five-year contract, with West Ham describing the fee as a "record fee paid by an EFL Championship club". It eclipses the £17.5m Ipswich Town spent last summer on Norway forward Sindre Walle Egeli and underlines just how hard the Hammers intend to hit back after relegation.
A Statement After the Fall
Relegated in May, West Ham now face their first Championship campaign since 2012. The reset begins on Sunday with a trip to Burnley, but the marquee signing will have to wait.
Engels will not be available to make his debut until the home league derby against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on Saturday, 22 August. That date already feels like a marker in the club’s calendar: the day the record signing finally steps out in claret and blue.
By then, expectations will be heavy. Engels arrives with serious numbers from his time in Glasgow: 17 goals and 22 assists in 100 appearances for Celtic, where he helped secure back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles after joining from Augsburg in August 2024. Before that, he came through at Club Brugge and has already broken into the Belgium national side, winning four caps.
Building a New Core
Engels is the fourth piece in a busy rebuild. West Ham have already brought in Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman and Israel winger Manor Solomon. This is not a gentle reset; it is a full-scale attempt to construct a promotion-ready spine in one window.
Director of player recruitment Nils Koppen made it clear Engels has been at the top of their list for a while.
“Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target," he told the club’s website. “For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence.
“Arne has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build moving forward. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge."
The message is obvious: this is not a speculative punt on potential. West Ham believe they are buying a ready-made leader for a promotion charge.
Promotion on His Mind
Engels, for his part, did not hide the scale of the ambition.
“It's a really nice project to come into," he said. “To try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal.
“It's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully it's going to be a good year."
The Championship is unforgiving, even for clubs with Premier League budgets and record transfer fees. West Ham have made their move. The question now is whether Engels becomes the signing that drags them straight back up, or the symbol of just how brutal this division can be.
