Victor Munoz Cuts Holiday Short for Liverpool Debut
Victor Munoz has barely had time to put his World Cup medal down. He certainly hasn’t had time for a full holiday.
Liverpool’s new winger reported to Melwood on Wednesday, days earlier than required, cutting short his post‑tournament break in a clear statement of intent. At 23, fresh from being part of Spain’s World Cup‑winning squad in the United States, he has chosen sweat over sunloungers.
He could have stayed away until later in August. FIFA rules entitled him to three weeks off after the finals, and given he didn’t play a minute for Spain as he nursed an injury, few would have begrudged him the rest. He chose something else.
“I was at the World Cup when the decision came through about the transfer,” Munoz told Liverpool’s official website. Unable to feature for Spain, his focus quickly shifted. “As soon as that competition was over the main thing on my agenda was getting here, training and getting to meet my team-mates.”
So he walked into a Liverpool pre-season already in full swing, the lingering fitness issue shrugged off, and a new life beginning in a new country. He knows the adjustment will be sharp. That is precisely why he has accelerated it.
“You need time to adapt when you are moving to a new club and a new country,” he said. “For me it was a case of the earlier I could get started, the better.”
A surprise signing, and still the only one
Munoz remains the only senior outfield signing of Liverpool’s summer so far, his £34.5 million release clause at Osasuna triggered in June in a move that caught much of Europe off guard. Newcastle had been heavily linked. Liverpool moved first, and fast.
The only other addition to the squad this year, French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, was wrapped up back in January for £60m. Since then, the market has been quiet. Too quiet for some supporters.
That has left new head coach Andoni Iraola working with a thin group during pre-season, stretched by injuries and extended holidays for other World Cup participants. Training sessions have felt more like a puzzle than a preparation plan.
Into that scene walks Munoz: young, expensive, ambitious – and available.
Ready for Monaco, ready for Anfield
Iraola is unlikely to throw him in recklessly. The Basque coach knows he needs to manage the winger’s minutes, especially given the recent injury that kept Munoz off the pitch in the United States.
But the player himself is not in the mood for caution.
“Well, I think I’m ready,” Munoz said. If Iraola calls, he will not hesitate. “If the coach says so after training and asks me to feature in the starting XI, I’ll be there. I’m keen and I can’t wait to get started. [Against] Monaco, why not?”
Sunday’s friendly against Monaco at Anfield is no ordinary warm-up. It is Iraola’s first home game in charge and arrives on the back of a bruising 4-2 defeat to Leeds, a second-half collapse in which Liverpool shipped all four goals and ended their US tour on a sour note.
Anfield will want a response. Iraola will want control. Munoz wants a platform.
Why Liverpool, why now?
For the winger, this move is not just about a bigger league or a larger pay packet. It is about backing a manager who, he says, has already backed him.
“I’m sure it’s the correct step for me,” Munoz explained. Iraola’s message to him was clear: Liverpool will be a place of trust and growth. “He was going to put a lot of confidence in me,” Munoz said. The coach reminded him he is still young, still developing, but arriving as a full professional expected to contribute now.
“He is going to help me to develop, and develop within and for this great club and in this mythical stadium, Anfield.”
That last word hangs in the air. Anfield. Munoz has chosen to sacrifice the final days of his holiday for the chance to step out there a little sooner.
If Iraola hands him that chance against Monaco, the first roar he hears on Merseyside will tell him whether this bold early start was worth it – and whether Liverpool’s only summer signing is ready to carry the weight that status brings.
