Transfer Market Update: Gakpo, Goretzka, and Major Moves
The managerial dominoes have barely stopped falling, and already the transfer market is bracing for another jolt.
Gakpo unsettled, Spurs on alert
At Liverpool, the aftershock of Arne Slot’s departure is immediate and sharp. Cody Gakpo, once seen as a central figure for the Dutch coach’s project, now wants out. According to SoccerNews, the winger is ready to leave Anfield, and Tottenham Hotspur sense an opening. Spurs are optimistic they can strike a deal, eyeing a player whose profile fits perfectly into their attacking blueprint.
While Gakpo looks for the exit, Harvey Elliott is heading in the opposite emotional direction. SportsBoom report that the young midfielder believes he can rebuild his Liverpool career despite Slot’s dismissal, seeing opportunity where others see uncertainty.
Manchester United cast a wide net
Across the northwest, Manchester United are working on two fronts and refusing to narrow their options.
At left back, talks have been held with Newcastle United over Lewis Hall, TEAMtalk reveal, but United’s search doesn’t stop there. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown are also on the radar, a clear sign that the club want depth and long-term solutions rather than a quick patch.
At the other end of the pitch, the picture is clearer. United have settled on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as their preferred option up front, according to Fichajes. The Frenchman is expected to command a fee in the region of $58 million (€50 million, £43 million), a price that underlines how desperate United are to add a reliable focal point to their attack.
Arsenal’s wings and Goretzka’s crossroads
Arsenal, never far from the action, are probing both ends of the market. Globo Esporte report that the Gunners have joined United in exploring a move for 20-year-old Porto winger William Gomes, with Atlético Madrid also circling. A three-way tussle for a raw, high-upside wide player is exactly the kind of battle top clubs now relish.
On the opposite flank of their planning board sits Leandro Trossard. Sporx say Beşiktaş have identified the Belgian as their top target for the summer window, and Mark Brus reports Arsenal are open to selling. The interest doesn’t stop in Istanbul either: Atlético Madrid, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Inter and Juventus are all watching closely. Trossard suddenly looks like one of the most movable attacking pieces in Europe.
In midfield, departing Bayern Munich stalwart Leon Goretzka is drawing admiring glances from Arsenal and Juventus, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. For a player of his pedigree, this summer feels like a defining fork in the road.
Bowen commits, Chelsea keep scouting
West Ham United have at least one anchor they can cling to. Jarrod Bowen has assured the club he wants to stay and help lead the Hammers back to the Premier League, The Sun report, despite strong interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle. In a market full of agitation and manoeuvring, a firm declaration of loyalty stands out.
Chelsea, though, are not standing still. The agent of Köln winger Said El Mala is actively batting away approaches from other clubs, BILD report, in an attempt to draw the London side to the table. Behind the scenes, the Blues have also been running the rule over Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, with Alex Goldberg noting that Chelsea scouts tracked him over the past season. The goalkeeping position at Stamford Bridge is clearly under quiet review.
Newcastle United, forced to react after losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, have moved quickly. The Telegraph report that Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz has been identified as their preferred replacement, a decisive response to a major outgoing.
Gvardiol, Cucurella and the La Liga chessboard
One of the most intriguing sagas of the summer could centre on Joško Gvardiol. Sportske novosti report that the defender wants to leave Manchester City, with Real Madrid his desired destination. City, for their part, will not stand in his way if he formally asks to go, but they have drawn a hard financial line: any suitor must put around $105 million (€90 million, £78 million) on the table. At the same time, City are trying to convince him to stay with a new contract. It’s a tug-of-war involving one of the game’s premier defenders and two of its most powerful clubs.
In Spain, Atlético Madrid are racing the clock and the market. Mundo Deportivo say they want to wrap up a deal for Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella as quickly as possible, before Barcelona and City turn it into a bidding war. Their ceiling, though, sits at around $58 million (€50 million, £43 million), well short of Chelsea’s asking price of $81 million (€70 million, £61 million). Something will have to give.
Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future is also edging toward a decision point. Fichajes report that he is considering leaving Arsenal and returning to La Liga, with Sevilla and Villarreal both keen on a deal that could cost as little as $5.8 million (€5 million, £4.3 million). For a goalkeeper once transferred for a world-record fee, it would mark a stark reset.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are putting up walls around their most prized youth. El Nacional report that the club have ruled out even opening negotiations for Fermín López, branding the midfielder completely untouchable at Camp Nou. At a time when the Catalans are open to sales in several areas, that level of protection speaks volumes.
Al Hilal are also ready to sit down with Barcelona over João Cancelo, according to Mundo Deportivo, and are seemingly prepared to soften their demands to around $17 million (€15 million). A permanent resolution to Cancelo’s long-running loan carousel might finally be in sight.
Madrid’s next moves
At Real Madrid, incoming manager José Mourinho is already shaping his wish list. AS report that the Portuguese coach has expressed an interest in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a move that would fit his long-standing preference for physical, hard-working midfield profiles.
One player not going anywhere is Brahim Díaz. Despite interest from Serie A, Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the playmaker has no intention of leaving the Bernabéu this summer. In a squad brimming with attacking talent, his decision to stay adds yet another layer of competition.
The stories are already piling up, the fees are eye-watering, and the fault lines between ambition and reality are starting to show. The only question now is which club blinks first.
