The Argentina international, who made it clear before the summer that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge, was a surprise omission from the matchday group. Spanish outlet Marca reported his absence, with suggestions in England that City are weighing up a late move for the 23-year-old.

Alonso moved quickly to cool the noise. For him, this was about football, not the market.

“It was simply about today’s match,” the Chelsea head coach said after the win over Luton. “We have other players who need minutes to play.”

He stressed that rotation and the specific demands of the tie shaped his thinking. No punishment, no disciplinary issue, just a tactical call, he insisted.

Pressed on when he decided to leave Fernández out, Alonso was blunt.

“Wednesday evening. It’s a decision I made.”

The manager also went out of his way to defend the midfielder’s attitude, calling him “extremely professional” and underlining the standards he sets in training. For now, Alonso is treating him as just another key member of the squad.

“Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that,” he added. “Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday.”

That Sunday reference is crucial. Brighton visit Stamford Bridge in the league, and Alonso left the door wide open for Fernández to return to the fold.

Yet the timing is impossible to ignore. With Manchester City’s interest being reported in England and the window closing fast, every selection call and every omission will be read as a signal.
