Tottenham Faces Double Blow as Romero Nears Inter Switch and Sarr Eyes Exit
Tottenham’s rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi is starting to look brutal as well as ambitious. Six new faces are already through the door, more attacking firepower is being lined up, and now two key members of the current squad are pushing to get out.
Cristian Romero and Pape Matar Sarr both want to leave this summer. One of them, by all accounts, is already halfway out of the door.
Romero says yes to Inter
For Spurs, Romero was supposed to be one of the pillars of the new era. A World Cup-winning centre-back, aggressive, front-foot, the kind of defender you build around.
Instead, he is on the brink of a move to Inter Milan.
Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, relayed by Sport Witness, report that Romero has given the green light to a switch to the Serie A champions, agreeing terms on a deal worth €5.5m a year running until 2031. Inter, the report claims, have reached an agreement with Tottenham for €35m plus a further €5m in bonuses, with a “three-way agreement” verbally sealed between club, club and player.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has already set the tone around the move. Writing on X, he stated Inter are “expected to make final decision soon” on Romero, before expanding on his YouTube channel that “there could be movement around Romero in the next days, eventually weeks,” and that he still expects the defender to leave Tottenham in this window.
The message is clear: the endgame has started.
For Spurs, it is a significant call. They survived on the final day last season, skirting the drop to the Championship, and the hierarchy are determined not to feel that jeopardy again. Yet in the middle of a defensive overhaul, they are prepared to cash in on their most high-profile centre-back.
A ruthless reset in north London
Tottenham have not been shy this summer. Six signings, a new spine, and a clear attempt to drag the club away from the anxiety of last season’s relegation scare.
Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have all arrived on free transfers, adding experience and depth. Big money has gone elsewhere. Spurs have spent £237m on Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
The spending tells its own story. De Zerbi has been handed tools, particularly in midfield, to reshape the way this team plays. Tottenham want to be proactive, technically secure, and far from any conversation about survival.
Now the focus turns to the front line. The club are exploring wide options, with Manchester City’s Savinho and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo among the leading targets as they look to sharpen the attack. The intent is aggressive. Spurs want depth, variety and goals from the flanks.
But you cannot keep adding without clearing space. That is where Romero and Sarr come in.
Sarr pushed down the pecking order
If Romero’s situation feels like a headline exit, Sarr’s is the quieter, but no less telling, subplot.
The Senegal international has found himself nudged down the midfield hierarchy by the arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes. De Zerbi is understood to be content with the depth he now has in the middle of the park, and that leaves Sarr vulnerable.
According to Football Insider, the 23-year-old is “looking to leave” before the window shuts, with Aston Villa among the clubs monitoring his situation. Tottenham, the report adds, are willing to let him go if the right offer lands on the table.
It is a sharp turn for a player once viewed as part of the club’s long-term core. But this is the reality of a squad being rapidly reshaped: reputations matter less than fit, and timing can be brutal.
Villa’s interest is logical. Unai Emery wants energy, legs and tactical discipline in midfield, and Sarr offers all three. A move in the final month of the window is firmly on the cards if the numbers line up.
Spurs gamble on change
Strip it back and the picture is stark. Tottenham, still smarting from a season that nearly ended in disaster, are tearing into the squad with real force.
They are spending heavily. They are targeting established names. They are prepared to lose a World Cup winner at centre-back and a talented young midfielder in order to rebalance the dressing room and back De Zerbi’s blueprint.
If Romero completes his switch to Inter and Sarr follows him out of the door, this will not look like a tweak. It will look like a transformation.
The question now is simple: will this level of upheaval drag Spurs away from danger and back towards relevance, or will losing two more international-calibre players prove a step too far in a summer of bold, unforgiving decisions?
