Thomas Partey Joins Al Shabab After Villarreal Exit
Thomas Partey has signed for Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab, sealing a one-year deal after leaving Villarreal on a free transfer this summer.
The Ghana midfielder, now 33, became a free agent in June when Villarreal confirmed they would not renew his contract, drawing a line under his brief spell in Spain. Al Shabab announced his arrival with a short, pointed message on their official X account on Friday: “Just feels right.”
Partey had joined Villarreal only last summer, also on a free, after his Arsenal contract expired. His time in north London stretched across five years, following his move from Atletico Madrid in October 2020, where he had established himself as one of Europe’s most combative midfielders.
A dressing room full of familiar faces
This is not a plunge into the unknown. Partey walks into an Al Shabab squad already packed with European experience and one very familiar name.
He will reunite with former Atletico Madrid teammate Yannick Carrasco, who has been one of the Saudi club’s standout attacking figures. Another Premier League link comes through Josh Brownhill, the ex-Burnley midfielder who joined the White Lions last year after half a decade at Turf Moor.
The spine of the squad has a distinctly European flavour. Tin Jedvaj, Daniel Podence, Vincent Sierro and Yacine Adli are all on the books, giving new head coach Thomas Letsch a group rich in top-level experience and varied backgrounds.
For Partey, it is a move that offers minutes, profile and a fresh environment at a stage of his career where short-term deals and sharp decisions define the final chapters.
Legal cloud hangs over late-career move
The transfer does not arrive in a vacuum. Partey’s career continues under the shadow of serious legal proceedings in England.
He started three of Ghana’s four matches at the 2026 World Cup, a reminder of his ongoing importance to the Black Stars. Yet he missed the group-stage clash with Panama after his visa application was refused. Under Canadian law, foreign nationals can be deemed inadmissible even without a conviction, a rule that intersected directly with his off-field situation.
The former Arsenal midfielder has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in London, relating to alleged incidents between 2020 and 2022. The charges involve three women. Partey has consistently denied all allegations and has entered not guilty pleas.
A trial at Southwark Crown Court was initially scheduled for November 2026. That date has now been pushed back, with proceedings set to begin on 8 June 2027.
So Partey steps into a new league, a new dressing room and a new chapter in Saudi Arabia, while knowing that the most significant battle of his career still lies ahead in a London courtroom.
