Thabo Moloisane’s long-running transfer story ended not in a boardroom, but under the floodlights, in a bruising 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 27-year-old finally pulled on the Kaizer Chiefs jersey in competitive action, closing the door on months of speculation and a tug-of-war for his signature. For Chiefs, it was a statement signing. For Moloisane, it was a choice rooted in more than money or the lure of a foreign league.
Chiefs over chasing Europe
After three solid seasons with Stellenbosch FC, Moloisane walked away from the Western Cape in July and committed his prime years to the Glamour Boys. He did so with options on the table.
His agent, Karabo Mathang-Tshabuse of P Management, revealed just how fierce the chase became. Clubs circled. Offers came in. One international move, in particular, gathered real momentum.
“He’s at Kaizer Chiefs, and yeah, they fought to have him there, and he wanted to be there, so he forsake all other deals to take that,” she told iDiski Times.
There was a concrete overseas proposal, in a region similar to where Mohau Nkota recently moved. On paper, it ticked the usual boxes for a South African player with ambition: a foreign league, a new market, a different stage. But the reality behind the scenes didn’t match the romantic idea.
“It didn’t work for the family in a similar jurisdiction to where Mohau Nkota is,” Mathang-Tshabuse explained. “But also, to be fair, it was not advancing in the way that we wanted it to advance.”
So Moloisane turned his back on the international route many dream about and chose Soweto instead.
Pressure, scrutiny, and a new standard
Signing for Chiefs is not a quiet career move. It’s a spotlight. Every touch is judged, every mistake replayed, every performance weighed against the club’s history and its desperate push back to the top of South African football.

“Yeah, I think happiness is relative,” she said of his move. “Every new opportunity brings its own challenges, and I think he’s aware of that. You know, he’s alive to the fact that this is an established team.
“You know, it has a captain who has led the team for a while, and so he has to adapt to the Kaizer Chiefs' style of play, but man, that guy is mature, and he signed up for it.”
The message is clear: this is not a player surprised by the size of the club he’s joined. He chose the weight of the badge with his eyes open.
Home, support, and the Johannesburg pull
Beyond tactics and prestige, the move north carries a deeply personal layer.
Leaving Stellenbosch means leaving a settled environment, but returning to Gauteng brings Moloisane closer to his core support system. For a defender operating in one of the most pressurised roles in South African football, that matters. A lot.
Being back in Johannesburg gives him proximity to family and familiar surroundings, elements that often shape consistency and resilience over the course of a long season. It’s not the kind of detail that makes headlines, yet it often separates those who cope at a big club from those who fade.
