Sunderland Signs Toulouse Star Methalie for €30m

Methalie, who will wear the No. 6 shirt, becomes Sunderland’s second major addition of the summer, following the arrival of Thomas Meunier in July. Speaking to the club’s official channels, he said he was “really excited to be here” and “can’t wait to pull on a Sunderland shirt for the first time,” describing it as “a brilliant time to join the club.” He revealed he had followed Sunderland’s run last season and called their seventh-place finish and Europa League qualification “incredible,” adding that the chance to join was “an easy decision.”
His focus is clear: the Premier League, the Europa League, and the chance to experience both alongside Sunderland’s supporters. He underlined the club’s ambition and his own desire to help the team “continue to progress” and give fans “plenty to be proud of.”
Breakthrough season in France
This move is the reward for a breakout 2025-26 campaign in France. Methalie made 30 first-team appearances for Toulouse, chipping in with two goals and two assists from the left flank. Those numbers, for a young defender, are not just decoration; they are evidence of a player who influences games at both ends of the pitch.
His rise has been steep. He entered the Toulouse academy in 2014, climbed through the age groups and only stepped into the first-team picture in the summer of 2025. Within weeks of his Ligue 1 debut in August 2025, he had forced his way into the starting XI and stayed there.

Built for the modern game
Standing at six-foot-two, Methalie brings size and athleticism to Sunderland’s left side. At Toulouse, he thrived as a left wing-back in Carles Martinez’s 3-4-3 system, asked to own the entire flank.
Martinez, who left in June to succeed Kasper Hjulmand as Bayer Leverkusen head coach, leaned heavily on Methalie’s stamina and presence. The youngster was trusted to defend aggressively, surge forward, and maintain width for 90 minutes.
