Sullivan’s Call-Up to U.S. National Team

Sullivan’s time has come.

The 16-year-old Philadelphia Union prodigy will be one of 26 players called in by Mauricio Pochettino for a four-game U.S. friendly slate running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6, a reward for a breakout stretch that has dragged his club back into relevance and into a playoff spot.

This isn’t a token invitation. Sullivan has driven a revitalized Union side that hasn’t lost a league match since the World Cup, stepping into pressure moments with the calm of a veteran and the energy of a teenager who refuses to see limits. Week after week, his performances have forced his name into the national conversation. Now it’s on the official squad list.

His rise with the U.S. setup has been steady, not sudden. Sullivan has been embedded in the U.S. Youth National Team system for years, first pulling on the shirt at U-15 level and growing into one of the program’s most closely watched prospects. Each age group brought a bigger role; this call brings the biggest stage yet.

There’s history on the line, too. If Sullivan sees the field in any of the four upcoming friendlies, he will become the second-youngest player ever to appear for the U.S. senior team, trailing only Freddy Adu, who made his debut in January 2006. That kind of milestone can weigh on a teenager. He doesn’t seem interested in shying away from it.

Earlier this month, the youngster made it clear he was hungry for a U.S. chance. Now it’s here, laid out across a 10-day window of friendlies, with a playoff push at club level running alongside it.
