The club confirmed on Monday, August 17, that the iconic former midfielder has returned as assistant coach of Barca Atletic, the reserve side that feeds talent into the first team. Three years after leaving, the heartbeat of Barcelona’s greatest era has walked back through the doors at Ciutat Esportiva, beginning the next chapter of his football life.

Busquets called time on his playing career at the end of last year after a spell at Inter Miami, closing a glittering run that included World Cup glory with Spain and a trophy-laden spell at Camp Nou. His final months as a player came in MLS, but his future was already a talking point.

After an Inter Miami match against the New England Revolution in October, he was asked in the mixed zone whether he saw himself on the bench one day. His answer was measured: he admitted he wanted to coach “in the future” but insisted he needed a sabbatical year first. He took that break. Now the pause is over.

The 36-year-old joins the staff of current Barca Atletic head coach Belletti, another familiar face from Barcelona’s past. Busquets will serve as Belletti’s assistant, trading his on-pitch orchestration for tactical input, match preparation and day‑to‑day work with the club’s next wave of prospects.

This is not just a sentimental reunion. It is a deliberate step into management. While he helps shape the reserve team, Busquets will also work toward his UEFA coaching licences, the formal pathway he needs to secure senior head coach qualifications.
