Tottenham have pushed their summer spending through the £300 million barrier with a bold, headline-grabbing move for Savinho – gambling £75 million on a winger who never truly cracked the Manchester City code.

The 22-year-old Brazilian arrives in north London with a reputation for raw pace and flair, but also with questions. Two seasons at City yielded just 84 appearances and seven goals, and he never became a guaranteed starter in Pep Guardiola’s final years in charge. Now Spurs are asking him to be something more: a catalyst.

“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” Savinho said in the club’s announcement, the relief obvious. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world. As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”

For Tottenham, this is not just another signing. It’s a statement that last season’s brush with disaster will not be repeated.

From survival to spending spree

Spurs ended the last campaign staring into the abyss. Relegation, unthinkable for a club of their size, lurked dangerously close before Roberto De Zerbi arrived and yanked them clear of the drop. Avoiding the second tier for the first time in 49 years became the only metric that mattered.

De Zerbi’s impact bought him time and authority. He is now using both.

The Italian has overseen a sweeping overhaul of the squad, and Savinho is the latest piece in a remodel that already includes big-money arrivals Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke. On top of that, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have walked through the door on free transfers, giving the squad a very different look to the one that flirted with catastrophe.

Yet revolution rarely runs smoothly. On the opening weekend of the new Premier League season, Tottenham’s new era began with a jolt: a 3-0 defeat to Brentford that underlined just how much work remains.

That is the backdrop Savinho walks into. Not a comfortable, settled side, but a club in a hurry.

De Zerbi’s wide gamble

De Zerbi has been clear about what he wants from his new winger.

“Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity,” the Spurs boss said. “We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

This is exactly the profile Tottenham have lacked: a wide player willing to take risks, commit defenders and stretch games. The fee reflects that need. City are set to receive an initial £75 million, with reports suggesting another £10 million could follow in add-ons if certain conditions are met.

For City, it represents a sizeable profit. They signed Savinho from Troyes, another club under the City Football Group umbrella, for £30 million in 2024. He had exploded onto the radar during a blistering loan spell at Girona, where his direct running and end product turned him into one of Europe’s most eye-catching young wingers.

England, though, has been a different story. The Girona version of Savinho has not yet fully appeared in the Premier League, and City’s depth meant he could not afford a slow burn. Tottenham are betting that with regular starts and a manager who relishes attacking expression, that Girona form can finally be revived.

Business not done yet

The Savinho deal may not be the last piece of traffic between the two clubs before the window shuts. Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush is also expected to make the journey from Manchester to north London before next week’s deadline, adding another attacking option to De Zerbi’s reshaped front line.

Tottenham’s outlay this window has already surged beyond £300 million, a figure that underlines both the scale of the rebuild and the pressure that now comes with it. Survival can no longer be the benchmark. Not with this level of investment. Not with this manager.

Savinho steps into a club that nearly fell off a cliff and has responded by flooring the accelerator. The price tag, the expectation, the urgency – all of it lands on a 22-year-old still trying to prove he belongs at the very top.
