Saudi Roshn League Faces Disruption Ahead of Gulf 27

The Saudi Roshn League is bracing for a shake-up to its calendar, with the national team’s Arabian Gulf Cup campaign set to take priority over domestic action.

Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and that tournament window is already forcing difficult decisions behind the scenes.

According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, the Roshn League authorities are preparing a series of fixture changes after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek technical director has asked for the national team’s training camp to be extended by an extra seven days before the start of the tournament, a move that leaves little room for the current league schedule to survive untouched.

Once that request landed, the dominoes started to fall.

The report states that more than one round of league matches will be affected, with the eighth round under particular threat. That set of fixtures is currently slated for 17 September, less than a week before Gulf 27 kicks off, and is now expected to be postponed.

At the heart of that round sits one of the showpiece games of the Saudi season: a clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena. The clash was shaping up as a marquee early-season test, but it now looks likely to be pushed back to clear the way for Donis’s preparations.

The coach’s stance is clear. He wants maximum time with his squad before the regional tournament, as he targets a title Saudi Arabia have not lifted for 23 years. The Green Falcons last won the Arabian Gulf Cup in 2003, and the drought has grown into a national itch that Donis has been hired to scratch.

He took charge of the national team before the start of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, a campaign that ended in disappointment with Saudi Arabia finishing bottom of Group H with just two points at the group stage. That early exit has only sharpened the focus on Gulf 27.

Now, with the league calendar bending around his plans, Donis has his stage. The question is whether the disruption to the Roshn League will be justified by a long-awaited return to regional glory.
