Romelu Lukaku Joins Fenerbahce as Istanbul Giants Make Statement
Romelu Lukaku is heading to Istanbul. Fenerbahce confirmed the signing of the former Manchester United and Chelsea striker on Wednesday, landing one of European football’s most prolific forwards as they chase an end to their title drought.
The Turkish club did not disclose the length of the 33-year-old Belgian’s contract or the transfer fee, but they did roll out their new star to the fans online.
"It's an honour and a privilege to be joining your club and to join this club," Lukaku said in a social media video addressed directly to Fenerbahce supporters. "I'm fit, 100 percent, ready to go."
A career of goals and setbacks now takes its next turn on the Bosphorus. Lukaku arrives as Belgium’s all-time leading scorer, with 93 goals for his country, a tally built across a decade at the top with spells at Chelsea, Manchester United and Inter Milan. His record speaks of a glittering career. His body, at times, has told a different story.
He signed for Napoli in the summer of 2024 and instantly hit the heights, helping the club to Scudetto glory in his debut season. Then came the crash: injury problems, a breakdown in relations with the club’s management and, ultimately, exile. Last season he played just 64 minutes of football for the Italian side.
Even so, Belgium still trusted him on the biggest stage. Lukaku was included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup and responded with three goals as the Red Devils battled their way to the quarter-finals, where they went out to eventual champions Spain. For all the turbulence at club level, his nose for goal at international level never really deserted him.
Now that instinct belongs to Fenerbahce.
Fenerbahce Load Up in Attack
Lukaku’s arrival adds serious weight to an attack that has already been reinforced this summer. The Istanbul club recently brought in former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood, a move that signalled their intent to arm themselves with high-end firepower.
Stack those names together and the message is obvious: Fenerbahce are tired of watching someone else lift the trophy.
They have finished runners-up to fierce rivals Galatasaray in each of the last four seasons. The last time they won the Turkish Super Lig was 2014. For a club of their size, and in a city that lives and breathes the rivalry, that gap feels like an eternity.
Lukaku steps into that pressure cooker knowing exactly what is expected of him: goals, presence, and big-game moments. He has carried those demands at Old Trafford, at San Siro, in Naples and for his country. Now he will walk out to the noise of Kadikoy, with a fanbase desperate for a champion and a squad suddenly stacked with attacking options.
He says he is ready. Fenerbahce believe this is the signing that can tilt the balance of power back across Istanbul.
