Rodri Joins Barcelona in £65m Transfer from Manchester City
Barcelona have landed one of the game’s elite midfielders, completing the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has agreed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, taking him back to Spanish football five years after leaving Atletico Madrid for the Premier League.
A serial winner leaves Manchester
Rodri, 30, walks away from City with a legacy carved in medals and big‑game performances. Across seven seasons he played 298 times and stacked up 12 major trophies: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and the 2023 Champions League.
Injuries disrupted his last two campaigns in England, slowing the metronome that had driven Pep Guardiola’s side. Then came the World Cup this summer. Rodri roared back, dominating midfields, dictating games and finishing the tournament as player of the competition as Spain lifted the trophy for a second time.
His goodbye to City supporters carried the weight of those years.
"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories," he said in a farewell message.
"What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.
"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."
Contract stand-off opens the door
Rodri was entering the final 12 months of the deal he signed in 2022. City wanted him to stay longer. Talks happened. An agreement never did.
That stand-off alerted Europe’s heavyweights. Real Madrid initially appeared in pole position, the obvious next step for a midfielder at the peak of his powers.
Back in March, speaking to Spanish radio about the possibility of moving to the Bernabeu, the former Atletico man did not dismiss the idea.
"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said.
The plot twisted. Real Madrid cooled their interest and stepped away. Barcelona, sensing their chance, moved.
Sources told BBC Sport that the Catalan club had Rodri’s approval to start formal talks with City. Their first bid, around £38.5m, was knocked back. Negotiations dragged, numbers rose, and the two clubs finally shook hands on a fee well above that initial offer.
A “dream” move to the Nou Camp
On Monday, Rodri flew into Barcelona, the move edging from rumour to reality. At the airport, with cameras and microphones waiting, he did not hide what it meant.
He called it a "dream" to play for Barcelona.
For the Nou Camp crowd, for a team searching for control and authority in midfield, that dream now runs both ways.
