Rodri’s Barcelona Move Confirmed: The Midfielder's New Number 16
Rodri’s Barcelona move is all but sealed – and he already knows exactly how he wants to be seen in blaugrana.
The Spanish midfielder has reached a full agreement to leave Manchester City for Barcelona, with the clubs settling on a deal worth 60 million euros fixed, plus a further 16 million tied to incentives and variables. The official announcement is expected within hours, but the framework is done: a four-year contract, more than 13 million euros net per season, and a salary that will place him among the highest earners in the dressing room.
And then there’s the number on his back.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Rodri made a direct request the moment talks advanced: he wanted the number 16 shirt. It is the number that has followed him through Manchester City and the Spanish national team, the number that has come to define him in the modern game.
That meant a conversation with Fermin Lopez.
The Barcelona midfielder currently holds the 16, but Romano reports that Fermin agreed to step aside and switch to the number 7 shirt. A small gesture on paper, but a significant one in the hierarchy of a squad welcoming a marquee signing. With that, the path cleared for Rodri to keep his “16” as he lands at Spotify Camp Nou.
Barcelona are expected to confirm the shirt number when they finally unveil Rodri as a new signing. All signs point in the same direction: a new era in the club’s midfield, led by a familiar figure wearing a very familiar 16.
