Rodri's Barcelona Debut: Tailored Fitness Plan and Cancelo's Return

Rodri’s first real day as a Barcelona player did not come with the usual fanfare of rondos and group photos. No tight passing drills in the main circle, no early duels with his new midfield partners. Instead, the club’s blockbuster summer signing was out on the pitch, but on his own programme.

The World Cup winner, fresh from his holidays and only a few days into pre-season work, trained away from the main group on Friday under a tailored fitness plan, SPORT reported. He had already taken part in the pre-match activation before the Joan Gamper Trophy, but this was different: longer, more specific, built to tune him into Hansi Flick’s demands rather than rush him towards Sunday.

Rodri insists he is ready.

“I’m ready to play already. The back operation that was talked about was nothing, it was an outpatient procedure. I’m ready to train with the team and, when the coach decides, once I’ve got some rhythm, I’ll be ready to play. I hope it will be as soon as possible.”

Barcelona, though, are choosing caution over emotion.

Flick’s no-risk approach

The squad returned to work on Friday after a rest day, starting preparations for Sunday’s trip to Elche at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero. While the bulk of the group went through a standard session, Rodri did not hit the same intensity levels as his new teammates, sticking instead to the individualised plan drawn up for him.

Even so, nobody at the club is ready to cross his name off the teamsheet just yet. It is still too early to rule him out of the first official match of the season. Saturday’s final training session, followed by Flick’s press conference, will offer a clearer picture of whether the midfielder can make his Barça debut this weekend.

The German coach has been consistent in recent weeks: no gambles. His staff’s priority is absolute – every player must have the time they need to reach full fitness. No shortcuts, no forced returns, even for a headline signing desperate to pull on the shirt.

Cancelo back in the fold – but still waiting

While Rodri worked to his own rhythm, Joao Cancelo finally slipped back into the daily life he has been craving.

The Portuguese full-back trained with the group on Friday after several difficult weeks spent waiting for his return to Spotify Camp Nou to be finalised. This time, there were no delays, no extra days of uncertainty. He was out on the grass, ball at his feet, part of the squad again.

Whether Flick can actually use him on Sunday is another matter. Cancelo still has to be registered before he can play, and at this stage none of Barça’s new signings have been cleared to feature. Even Andreas Christensen, who extended his contract this summer, is yet to be registered.

For now, Cancelo is doing everything he can control. He trained normally with all the available first-team players, joined by a group of youngsters: Eder Aller, Xavi Espart, Jordi Pesquer, Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, Hamza Abdelkarim, Brian Farinas and Alvaro Cortes.

The work is underway. The ideas are being drilled in. What remains, for both Rodri and Cancelo, is the same thing every new season at Barcelona demands: the green light – and the moment the coach decides it is time.
