Referee Injured in Pre-Season Friendly Chaos
A pre-season friendly in eastern France lurched into chaos on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a mass confrontation between players.
The 26-year-old official was in charge of the friendly between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers boiled over late in the first half.
What had been a routine warm-up game for the new season turned ugly in the 40th minute. A seemingly minor shirt-tug between two opposing players escalated quickly as they squared up to each other. Teammates from both sides sprinted in, and a melee formed in seconds.
Demoncay moved in to separate the players. Instead, she was caught in the chaos.
Video circulating on social media shows the referee being knocked off balance in the crush of bodies and falling heavily to the turf, right in front of a large pitchside sign bearing a pointed message: “Respect the referee.”
She stayed down, clutching her arm, as the noise around her faded into concern. Assistant referees rushed in, joined by security staff and medical personnel, who streamed onto the pitch to restore order and assess her condition. The game stopped while Demoncay received treatment on the field.
Despite the heavy fall, she initially tried to continue. After several minutes, she got back to her feet and, once play resumed, moved to the touchline to operate as an assistant referee rather than remain in the middle.
Her involvement did not last long. At half-time, Demoncay left the field and did not return, with another assistant stepping in to take over her duties. Local media later reported she had suffered a concussion.

On the pitch, Metz went on to win the match 3-1, but the incident overshadowed the result.
Fortuna Sittard acknowledged the flashpoint in their match report, calling it a “remarkable moment” without offering further detail. Metz made no mention of the clash or the injury in their own coverage of the game.
For both clubs, it was supposed to be just another step in pre-season preparation. Instead, the afternoon in Forbach left a stark image: a young referee lying on the grass beneath a banner demanding respect, while the sport once again wrestled with its relationship with those tasked with keeping order.
