Real Madrid's Playmaker Battle: Guler vs Bellingham

Real Madrid are bracing for one of the fiercest selection battles of their season, and it’s all happening in one position: the playmaker’s seat behind Kylian Mbappe.

Only one of Arda Guler or Jude Bellingham can have it. For now, the momentum belongs to the Turk.

According to Spanish outlet “Mundo Deportivo”, Jose Mourinho is shaping his new Real Madrid around a dual attacking midfield axis just off Mbappe, the crucial bridge between the engine room and the penalty area. On paper, that role seemed tailor-made for Bellingham, the English star expected to be the automatic choice.

Pre-season ripped up that script.

Bellingham reported back late after the World Cup. Guler did not waste a second. Across the warm-up games, the 19-year-old turned into one of Madrid’s standout performers, demanding attention every time he touched the ball.

Mourinho initially deployed him deeper, testing his discipline in midfield. Then came the switch. Pushed higher into the attacking midfield role, Guler exploded. He dictated play, found pockets of space, and produced performances that went beyond internal expectations, forcing his way to the front of Mourinho’s thinking.

The reward is now in sight. The latest indications from the club point to Guler starting ahead of Bellingham in Real Madrid’s opening league match against Espanyol on 22 August.

That leaves Bellingham facing a very different challenge to the one he anticipated at the start of the summer. To reclaim that central role behind Mbappe, he will have to dislodge a teammate in full flow — and convince Mourinho that the position still has his name on it, not Arda Guler’s.
