Real Madrid's Midfield Strategy: Guler and Silva's Roles

Real Madrid are into the final stretch of their pre-season work, with Espanyol waiting on Saturday to open the 2026-27 campaign. Jose Mourinho’s first summer back at the Bernabeu has been busy, occasionally bumpy, but undeniably purposeful.

He has his reinforcements. Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Yan Diomande have arrived to plug obvious gaps and thicken out a squad that looked thin in key areas last season. The structure of the team feels more robust, the options wider.

One problem lingers, though. The midfield controller Mourinho wanted has not walked through the door. Enzo Fernandez slipped away. Rodri too. The pivot that was supposed to anchor this new Madrid has not been signed, and time has run out before the league kicks off.

So the answer, at least for now, is likely to come from inside Valdebebas.

Arda Guler, the long-term project

That is where Arda Guler enters the conversation. Speaking to El Chiringuito, in comments relayed by Diario AS, Mourinho made it clear he sees a different future for the gifted Türkiye international than the one many imagined when he arrived.

"I love Güler. I think something similar is going to happen to Modric or Bernardo Silva. You start in one position and end up in another, you start as a 10 and you will finish as an 8 or 6. I think Arda will go in that direction with his evolution and knowledge of the game."

This is not about an immediate reinvention. Guler, still young and still adapting, will not simply be dropped in front of the back four on opening night. But Mourinho has drawn the roadmap: less pure No 10, more all-court midfielder. Less luxury, more responsibility.

The comparison with Luka Modric and Bernardo Silva is not casual name-dropping. It is a clear indication of the type of player Mourinho believes Guler can become – someone who starts life high up the pitch and gradually slides deeper, using vision and rhythm to dictate rather than just decorate.

For the present, though, that deeper role has another leading candidate. Bernardo Silva is being primed to operate there in the short term, the Portuguese star expected to bring control, craft and pressing intelligence to a zone that Madrid have struggled to dominate consistently.

Mourinho spoke glowingly about his compatriot, underlining his importance to the project and brushing aside the idea that the signing was motivated by anything other than footballing logic. This was not, he stressed, a move made simply to land a psychological punch on Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.

Silva, in Mourinho’s eyes, “brings everything” – the work rate, the technical quality, the tactical brain. He is the bridge between the current version of Madrid and the one Mourinho wants to see by the end of his tenure, a side that can suffocate games with the ball as effectively as it can tear forward in transition.

So Madrid head into the new season with a hybrid solution: Silva as the immediate organiser, Guler as the long-term project in evolution, and the search for that perfect controller temporarily paused. Whether that gamble holds over a full campaign will define far more than just Mourinho’s first year back in the Bernabeu dugout.
