Real Madrid's Late Carlos Espí Winner Secures Victory at Elche
Real Madrid flirted with a collapse at Elche, then snatched victory at the death.
Carlos Espí struck in stoppage time to seal a chaotic 3-2 win on Tuesday, finishing off a move sparked by Jude Bellingham and polished by Kylian Mbappé, as Madrid clawed back control of a match they had allowed to slip from their grasp.
With the score locked at 2-2 and nerves fraying, Bellingham produced the moment that tilted the night. Near midfield, he killed the tension with a single touch, gliding past his marker with a long, elegant stride before sliding a perfectly weighted pass into Mbappé’s path. The France star burst into the area and, instead of shooting, squared unselfishly for Espí, who tapped in from close range to silence the home crowd and drag Madrid level on points with Barcelona.
The defending champions can now move back ahead when they host promoted Racing Santander on Wednesday. They will know, though, that nights like this cannot become a habit.
Madrid had seemed in complete control early on. On 25 minutes, they forced the opener when Matías Dituro turned the ball into his own net, handing the visitors a lead without a Madrid player needing to apply the final touch. Eight minutes later, the gap doubled. Yan Diomande picked out Mbappé in the area and the forward did the rest, finishing from close range to make it 2-0 and, at that stage, threatening to turn the evening into a procession.
Instead, the game unraveled for Madrid.
Elche refused to fold. The hosts grew into the contest, pushed higher and finally broke through in the 71st minute when Abiel Osorio rose to meet a cross and steered a header past the Madrid goalkeeper to haul his side back into it. The stadium came alive, and Madrid, who had cruised for an hour, suddenly looked rattled.
The pressure told again in the 83rd minute. Fer Niño found the equalizer, punishing hesitant defending to level the match at 2-2 and send a jolt of anxiety through the visiting bench. A two-goal cushion was gone, and with it the air of control that had defined Madrid’s first half.
There was another scare for the Spanish giants earlier in the night. Shortly after scoring his goal, Mbappé went down and stayed on the turf in visible pain, drawing immediate concern. Medical staff rushed on, the stadium held its breath, but after treatment the forward returned to the pitch and played on, eventually providing the decisive assist in stoppage time.
Madrid leave Elche with three points, a late hero in Carlos Espí, and a reminder that even their star-studded attack cannot always mask defensive lapses. The table looks healthy. The performance, less so.
