Real Madrid's Final Friendly: Diomandé's Debut and Stars Return

Real Madrid’s final dress rehearsal before the new season will look a lot more like the real thing.

José Mourinho has named a squad for tomorrow’s friendly against Schalke in Germany that suddenly feels heavyweight again. Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois are all back on the team sheet, restoring some of the club’s biggest names to the picture just in time for the last test before Espanyol on 22 August.

There is a new face as well – and an expensive one.

Diomandé steps into the spotlight

Yan Diomandé, the Ivorian defender who became the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history, has been called up for the first time. Barring a late change, this will be his debut in white.

All eyes will be on how quickly he connects with his new teammates. The coaching staff want to see not only his defensive authority, but also what he can offer when Madrid pour forward. There is a real possibility of him sharing the pitch with Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, a first glimpse of a side that could define the club’s season.

Schalke might be “only” a friendly, but for Diomandé it is a stage. A first audition in front of Mourinho, and a fanbase eager to see what a record fee has bought.

Mbappé, Bellingham and Courtois return

For Mbappé, this is his first friendly of the summer, a return to Mourinho’s plans after a staggered pre-season. His presence alone changes the tone of the trip. With Bellingham back knitting things together in midfield and Courtois behind them after his own long road back, Madrid suddenly look far closer to full strength.

Not everyone is on the plane, though.

Endrick has been left in Madrid, placed on a tailored programme designed to protect him from injury at the start of what will be a demanding campaign. Aurélien Tchouaméni also misses out, sidelined by a severe thigh strain that the club will not risk in a warm-up game.

The long-term absentees remain unchanged: Éder Militão, Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio are still out of the picture and will continue their recoveries away from the action.

Mourinho’s last big experiment

For Mourinho, this is more than a ceremonial run-out. It is the final laboratory session before the real thing.

The Portuguese coach wants to stretch his key players with extra minutes, lock in the structure he trusts and continue feeding the new signings into his system. Schalke gives him one last chance to test combinations under something approaching competitive pressure.

At the back, the battle lines are clear. Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konaté have muscled their way into the discussion with strong pre-season performances, and this match could be decisive in shaping the back line for Espanyol.

Konaté has emerged as a direct rival for the centre-back spot alongside Dean Huijsen, a duel that adds an edge to every defensive action in Gelsenkirchen. On the right, the contest is just as fierce: Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries are locked in a straight fight, with the Dutchman making a powerful case since his arrival.
