Real Madrid Faces Crucial Stretch: Key Players Return
Real Madrid step into a dangerous stretch of the season knowing exactly what is at stake. Three points off Barcelona, three games in nine days, and no margin for error. It starts now, at home to Rayo Vallecano.
Slip again, and the leaders might disappear over the horizon. Keep winning, and the pressure shifts back to Catalonia.
Mourinho’s options return
Jose Mourinho at least walks into this one with a stronger hand than he had against Inter. The squad that travelled to the Champions League tie was patched together; this time, key pieces are back on the board.
Aurelien Tchouameni headlines the list of returnees, available again to bolster the centre of the pitch. Marco Asensio is back too, having rejoined full training after an ill-timed injury that stalled his start to the campaign. Thiago also comes into contention, adding yet another body to a midfield Mourinho knows he will have to rotate heavily over the next week and a half.
That depth matters. The calendar is brutal: Rayo at the Bernabeu, a trip to Elche on Tuesday, then the capital derby with Atletico Madrid looming at the end of the run. Every decision now has a knock-on effect.
Suspensions have already forced Mourinho into some uncomfortable calls. Arda Guler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva all missed the Inter clash after red cards in last season’s Champions League carried over. Their absence ripped out a chunk of Real’s creative core for that night. Now, at least domestically, Mourinho can start putting the pieces back together.
The midfield dilemma
One question dominates his planning: who partners Bernardo Silva in midfield?
The decision narrows quickly to two names – Eduardo Camavinga or Federico Valverde.
Valverde has been the workhorse of Real’s season so far. He has started all four La Liga matches and one in the Champions League, barely leaving the pitch. Across the campaign, he has missed just over 20 minutes: taken off in the 77th minute against Malaga, then withdrawn for the final eight minutes versus Real Betis. That’s it.
Mourinho knows he cannot run the Uruguayan into the ground in September and expect him to be fresh in April. He has spoken with his selections, trimming minutes where he can, choosing his battles. This three-game burst will test that strategy.
Bernardo Silva, by contrast, has been handled with more restraint. The Portuguese started Real’s first two league fixtures, then came off the bench against Malaga and Betis. He has played 205 of a possible 360 La Liga minutes – around 57% of the available time.
Those numbers tell a story. Mourinho clearly wants Silva on the pitch, but not at any cost. The coach appears determined not to overload his compatriot before the season hardens into its decisive phases.
So the choice is sharp: keep leaning on Valverde’s engine, or turn to Camavinga to share the burden and change the rhythm of the midfield? It is the one area of the XI that still feels genuinely up for grabs.
Arda Guler’s chance
Further forward, another storyline returns to the surface. Arda Guler is expected to come back into the starting line-up after sitting out Real’s Champions League opener.
The Turk has made a bright start to the season, but he finds himself in one of the most unforgiving dressing rooms in Europe for attacking players. Every game is an audition. Every touch is judged.
Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham are, at this stage, untouchable in Mourinho’s plans. They are the spine of his attacking structure and are again expected to start. That leaves Guler fighting for his place in the gaps around them, trying to wedge open a door that closes quickly on anyone who dips in form.
He cannot afford quiet nights. With Mbappe’s explosiveness, Vinicius’ chaos and Bellingham’s authority, the standard in the final third is brutal. Guler knows that every start, every cameo, is a chance he has to seize if he wants to remain in Mourinho’s first-choice rotation when the season heats up.
Back line locked in
At the back, there is little drama. Mourinho is not expected to tinker much with the defence that faced Inter.
Thibaut Courtois will stand in goal, protected by a back four of Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella. The structure is clear, the roles defined.
Cucurella, in particular, looks to have convinced Mourinho. The left-back has begun to settle into the line-up, offering enough reliability to keep his place. Around him, Konate, Huijsen and Dumfries have earned the coach’s trust in these early weeks, giving Real a defensive base he seems reluctant to disturb.
Diaz waiting, decision in the middle
Not everyone can be squeezed into the starting XI. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Brahim Diaz is set to begin on the bench again, alongside Yan Diomande, sacrificed by the sheer weight of options in attacking and creative areas.
That leaves Real’s expected line-up against Rayo Vallecano looking largely defined:
- Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois.
- Defence: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella.
- Midfield: Bernardo Silva, Federico Valverde or Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham.
Up front, Mbappe and Vinicius will carry the threat, with Guler pushing to make his mark around them.
The shape is set. The stakes are clear. One big call in midfield remains on Mourinho’s desk – and with Barcelona already three points ahead, how bold is he prepared to be?
