Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a clear line under his day‑to‑day influence at St Mary’s while remaining tied to the club as co-owner.

The 42-year-old Dane, a central figure in Sport Republic’s football portfolio, will no longer sit on the Saints board but retains his stake in the Championship side. His departure from the director’s seat formalises what has, in reality, been a gradual retreat.

Ankersen’s influence at Southampton has already been diluted in recent seasons. His appointment as president of Turkish club Goztepe shifted his focus away from the south coast, even as he continued to have a say in recruitment decisions behind the scenes.

Before arriving at Southampton, Ankersen built his reputation at Brentford, serving there from 2015 to 2021 during the club’s rise from Championship contenders to a Premier League outfit. That period, capped by promotion to the top flight, helped cement his status as one of the game’s most analytically minded executives.

Sport Republic, headed by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, holds the majority stake in Southampton. Solak’s group has steadily assembled a multi-club network, also controlling French side Valenciennes and Goztepe alongside the Saints.

The wider empire is under strain. Valenciennes are battling in France, and Goztepe sit bottom of the Turkish Super Lig, a position that demands attention and strategic clarity from the ownership group.

Ankersen’s move away from the Southampton boardroom underlines that shift in priorities – and leaves the question of how the club’s football direction will evolve without one of its original architects at the table.
