Rangnick–Schöttel Rift Signals End of ÖFB Era

The fault lines inside the Austrian Football Association are no longer hidden. They are out in the open, and on Friday they are expected to claim a major figure.

According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, Peter Schöttel’s future as sporting director will be on the table at a supervisory board meeting, with his departure now looming after nine years at the heart of the ÖFB’s sporting structure.

At the centre of it all: a relationship with national team coach Ralf Rangnick that insiders now describe as shattered.

Broken partnership at the top

The ÖFB have already pushed Schöttel to the sidelines. Officially, he still holds the title. In practice, the power axis has shifted away from him, with the bond between the federation’s two most important sporting figures seen as broken beyond repair.

Marc Janko, former Austria striker and now a Sky pundit, did not sound surprised by the developments. Speaking about the mood behind closed doors, he said: “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising.”

For months, the dynamic between Rangnick and Schöttel has been under strain. Now, it looks unsustainable.

“With Schöttel and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” Janko explained. “It is indeed the case that for some time Rangnick, in all the matters that are important to him, has not been doing that via Peter, but via other people.”

When the national coach starts bypassing the sporting director on key decisions, the hierarchy is no longer a hierarchy. It is a power struggle. And Schöttel appears to be losing it.

End of a successful chapter

If Friday confirms his exit, it will close a chapter that has delivered some of Austria’s most stable years in recent memory.

Schöttel, now 59, joined the ÖFB setup in 2017 as U19 coach. Within two months he had been promoted to overall sporting director, taking charge of the broader sporting strategy. Results followed.

Under his watch, Austria reached the European Championship in back-to-back cycles, qualifying for the tournaments in 2021 and 2024. On both occasions, the ÖFB side advanced to the last 16, underlining a new level of consistency on the big stage.

The high point came last summer. Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years, a landmark moment for the federation. Their journey ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the step itself was historic.

Those achievements now sit in stark contrast to the internal discord that threatens to push out the architect of that era.

Prödl emerges as the favourite

The ÖFB have not yet announced who will take over if Schöttel is formally relieved of his duties. Still, a leading candidate is already being talked about in the corridors of power.

Krone reports that Sebastian Prödl has emerged as the internal favourite. The former Werder Bremen defender, a long-serving Bundesliga professional and Austrian international, has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024.

His work there has drawn strong reviews inside the association. He knows the structures, understands the pathway, and has already built trust with key figures.

One factor could prove decisive: Prödl is said to enjoy an excellent relationship with Ralf Rangnick. Where the bond with Schöttel has fractured, the link with Prödl appears smooth, cooperative, and aligned.

For a federation suddenly defined by a power axis gone wrong, that might be the clearest sign of where this story is heading.
