Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Nitrous Oxide Possession

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after a motorway crash involving a Lamborghini, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed.

The incident took place on 28 May on the M3 southbound, near the Minley interchange. Police say it was a single-vehicle collision. No other cars were involved and no injuries were reported.

Sterling, 31, is accused of dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

The forward, currently without a club, has spent more than a decade in the spotlight for his football rather than his off-field life. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in England, he came through the academy at QPR before breaking through at Liverpool, where he made his senior debut and quickly emerged as one of the country’s brightest young talents.

His move to Manchester City in 2015 pushed him into the elite. Under Pep Guardiola he became a key figure, winning four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup in 2019, while regularly hitting double figures for goals.

On the international stage, Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for England. He played a central role in Gareth Southgate’s side reaching the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020, often carrying the attacking burden in major tournament knockout games.

In 2022 he joined Chelsea, a move billed as a fresh chapter at a Champions League regular. The story never quite took hold. After slipping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, he spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal, then left Chelsea and signed a short-term deal with Dutch club Feyenoord until the end of the campaign.

That contract has now expired, leaving Sterling without a team as he faces his court date in September.
