Radek Vitek Joins Middlesbrough: Record Transfer and New Beginnings

Radek Vitek has closed the Old Trafford chapter of his career, and he has done it with a statement move.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper has joined Middlesbrough on a permanent deal worth up to £14 million, a fee that makes him the most expensive goalkeeper in Championship history. Leicester City's outlay on Mads Hermansen and Southampton's move for Daniel Peretz now sit in his wake. The bar in the second tier has been raised, and it has been raised for a player who refused to settle for life as an understudy.

Manchester United have not simply waved him goodbye. They have protected their bet. He arrived at United’s academy in 2020 from Sigma Olomouc, another tall, raw teenager hoping Old Trafford would turn potential into something more tangible. He quickly made his mark. In the 2021/22 FA Youth Cup, he started every game in a triumphant run, anchoring a side that restored some pride to United’s youth ranks. From there, he stepped up to the Under-21s and outgrew that level too.

Loans became the next step. Accrington Stanley took him for six months in January 2024, a first taste of senior English football and the realities that come with it. Then came a season-long spell with Austrian side Blau-Weiß Linz for 2024/25, another stretch away from Old Trafford that hardened his game and his mentality.

The real turning point came with Championship football. A loan to Bristol City handed him exposure to the division he now calls home permanently. Those performances did not go unnoticed. Interest from around the league followed, and Middlesbrough — a club that pushed hard for promotion last season — moved to the front of the queue.

For Boro, this is a bold, ambitious signing. For Vitek, it is the chance he has been chasing since he first walked into Carrington: a realistic shot at being a first-choice goalkeeper at a club with genuine Premier League aspirations.

He leaves Manchester with his route blocked but his reputation intact, carrying the weight of a record fee and the backing of a club that has made sure his story with them might not be over.
