Qatar's Madibo Receives Five-Match Ban After Kone Injury
Assim Madibo’s World Cup has been stopped in its tracks.
The Qatar midfielder has been handed a five-match suspension after the tackle that left Canada’s Ismael Kone with a broken leg in their group-stage clash at the FIFA World Cup last week. Madibo was sent off in the 54th minute, and Canada ruthlessly took advantage, running out 6-0 winners.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled the challenge as “serious foul play,” imposing a ban that will sideline the 29-year-old well beyond the group phase. Under FIFA regulations, Madibo has the right to appeal the decision to the FIFA Appeal Committee, but for now, his tournament hangs by a thread.
The incident turned an already difficult night for Qatar into a heavy defeat. Reduced to ten men, they were overrun as Canada piled on the goals and tightened their grip on qualification.
Off the pitch, though, the tone has been different.
In the days after the match, once Kone had undergone surgery on the injured leg, Madibo visited the Canada midfielder in hospital. It was a small, human moment after a brutal collision on the biggest stage in the game.
“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field,” the Qatar Football Federation said in a statement. “We wish the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch.”
Madibo, born in Khartoum and capped 53 times by Qatar, now watches his national team’s fate from the sidelines. Qatar close out their group-stage campaign on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina, knowing a win can still push them into the knockout rounds.
They must chase that result without one of their most experienced midfielders, while the tackle that removed him from the tournament continues to shape both teams’ World Cup stories.
