Promise David Joins Brighton & Hove Albion on Loan
Promise David’s winding road is about to hit the Premier League.
Brighton & Hove Albion confirmed on Tuesday that the Canadian international has joined from Union Saint-Gilloise on a season-long loan, a deal that carries an obligation to buy if certain undisclosed conditions are triggered. The permanent move is reported to be worth around US$29.7 million.
Union framed it as a landmark departure, announcing that David will be playing in the Premier League “from the next season onwards” for a record fee for the Belgian club.
From Brussels glory to Brighton’s project
David arrives on the south coast with serious numbers behind him. In two seasons at Union, he struck 41 goals in 82 appearances and played a key role in their historic 2025 title triumph — the club’s first league crown in 90 years. His form was rewarded with a contract extension through June 2029 only last year, underlining how quickly his stock has risen.
Brighton have now moved decisively to make him the latest piece in their long-term attacking rebuild, betting that his prime years will play out in blue and white.
“Promise is someone we have been watching for some time, he is an out-and-out striker who possesses outstanding physical attributes and a track record of scoring goals,” sporting director Mike Cave said in a club statement. “His experience at international level and in European competition will hopefully prove valuable this season.
“At 25, he’s entering his prime playing years and we’re excited to see him continue to develop in our environment.”
For a club that has spent nine straight seasons in England’s top flight and finished eighth in the Premier League last term, it is another statement that the model is not slowing down.
A global journey, a national switch
David’s route to this point has been anything but linear. Born in Brampton, Ont., to Nigerian parents, he first emerged on the international scene with Nigeria’s under-23s, making his debut for them in October 2022.
The story then took a sharp turn. After discussions with Canada head coach Jesse Marsch, David applied to switch allegiance. FIFA approved the move in February 2025, handing Canada a powerful new option at centre-forward.
He featured for Canada at this past summer’s World Cup, scoring once in limited minutes off the bench while managing a hip injury. His senior record now stands at four goals in 14 appearances, a tally that feels more like a starting point than a ceiling.
The club game has taken him even further afield. Before landing in Belgium in July 2024, David played professionally in Croatia, Malta and Estonia, collecting stamps in his passport and minutes in his legs. Each stop added layers to a profile Brighton believe can translate to the intensity of English football.
Now comes the hardest test. A new league, a new country, a club that expects to compete, not just survive. Brighton have made their move. The question is whether Promise David can turn potential and promise into Premier League goals.
