Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have dipped into Chelsea’s academy once again, securing highly rated winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on a season-long loan.

The 17-year-old arrives with serious pedigree for his age. A product of Chelsea’s youth system, he already has a senior appearance to his name, coming off the bench in a 7-0 FA Cup demolition of Port Vale. In January he signed his first professional contract with the west London club, a clear signal of how they view his potential.

From there, his rise accelerated. Kavuma-McQueen spent last season on the fringes of the first team, named on the bench for Champions League ties against Paris St-Germain and Ajax. As Chelsea chased points in the Premier League run-in, he was again trusted in the match-day squad against Liverpool and Tottenham.

At academy level he has climbed every rung, featuring regularly for Chelsea’s Under-18s before stepping into the U21 side last season. Comfortable on either flank, he brings pace and direct running to the wide areas, exactly the profile Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has been hunting.

“We’ve been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in,” Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.”

Kavuma-McQueen also travelled with Chelsea’s first team during pre-season and collected minutes on what Mousinho described as their “very exciting” tour, underlining the club’s belief in his development.

“We’ve tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we’re really excited to get him through the door,” Mousinho added. “I think he’s going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we’re really pleased to get this one done.”

At Fratton Park he will drop straight into a competitive group of wide players, joining Abu Kamara, Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith. For Portsmouth, it’s another injection of youthful energy out wide. For Kavuma-McQueen, it’s the first real test of whether Chelsea’s next bright thing can turn promise into end product.
