Portsmouth Strengthen Defense with Benjamin Arthur Loan

Portsmouth have moved to strengthen their back line with the season-long loan capture of highly rated Brentford defender Benjamin Arthur.

The 20-year-old centre-half arrives at Fratton Park after a spell in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, where he made six appearances last season, gaining a first taste of regular top-flight football. He has also featured three times for Brentford’s senior side and has been capped by England at youth level up to Under-20s.

Blues head coach John Mousinho made no attempt to hide his satisfaction at getting the deal done, hailing Arthur’s blend of physical presence and composure.

"We're thrilled to bring Benjamin here for the season to boost our defensive ranks," Mousinho said. "He possesses all the attributes you expect of a centre-back and is also more than comfortable with the ball at his feet."

Arthur’s arrival is aimed squarely at bolstering Portsmouth’s options for what they hope will be a decisive third campaign in the Championship. With the club targeting progression and greater stability at the back, Mousinho believes the youngster’s exposure to Premier League and Scottish Premiership standards can translate quickly.

"Despite his relatively young age, he already has experience of top-flight football, and we feel he can be a real asset as we look to progress in our third season in the Championship," he added.

Portsmouth now hand a key defensive role to a player Brentford regard as one for the future. The question is how quickly Arthur can turn that potential into Championship authority.
