Penybont 1-0 Colwyn Bay: Pritchard Secures Unbeaten Streak

Penybont’s unbeaten start to the Cymru Premier season survived a bruising night and a bruising opening 20 minutes, edging past Colwyn Bay 1-0 to climb into sixth.

The game looked to be unravelling almost before it had begun. Two summer signings, two early blows.

Jonathan Leko and Ryan Hill, both brought in to sharpen Penybont’s attacking edge, were forced off with injuries inside the opening stages. The home crowd fell flat, the rhythm snapped, and suddenly Rhys Griffiths was reshuffling a plan that had barely had time to take shape.

The response came from the bench.

Owain Pritchard, thrown into the chaos, delivered the night’s decisive moment. When Colwyn Bay keeper Mark Halstead misjudged a routine situation, Pritchard reacted first, pouncing on the loose ball and finishing from close range to give Penybont the lead.

The goal jolted the hosts into life. Confidence grew, and so did the chances.

Veteran forward Chris Venables almost buried the contest soon after. His effort crashed against the crossbar, with Halstead beaten and Colwyn Bay hanging on. One inch lower and the scoreline, and the mood, would have been very different.

Colwyn Bay refused to fold. Chasing the game after the break, they pushed higher and began to test the resolve of a Penybont side suddenly forced to protect what they had rather than chase what they wanted.

The pressure finally told in chances, if not in goals. Callum Bratley found space and let fly. Ethan Roberts followed with another effort. Both times, young goalkeeper Daniel Higgs stood firm, reading the danger and preserving the slender advantage with assured stops that belied his age.

As the clock ticked down, Bay kept coming, but Penybont dug in. Blocks, clearances, and just enough composure saw them over the line.

No flourish, no comfort. Just three points, a clean sheet, and an unbeaten record still intact — earned the hard way on a night that could easily have gone the other way.
